Grand Canyon Activity – The One-Day Smooth Water Float Tour

Used to be that family vacations to Grand Canyon National Park consisted of stopping at a couple of lookouts. It doesn’t have to be that way, especially with the advent of smooth water float tours. The bus continues via a two-mile-long tunnel through the base of the dam to the pontoon-boat dock. Boats seat up to 17 people and are adventure-grade. Total distance you’ll travel on water is about 15 miles. There are several pullouts, including one where you take a short hike to a rock wall with Indian petroglyphs. Tours end at Lee’s Ferry, the staring point for whitewater rafting expeditions.

The other variation of South Rim smooth water float tours features an airplane ride to the Page Airport. The sites you’ll see are phenomenal and include Desert Watchtower, the Zuni Corridor, the Colorado River Confluence and much more. Before you embark on the rafting trip, you’ll hop a Jeep 4×4 and take a guided excursion to famous Antelope Valley.

Float trips are all-inclusive and come with the boat, all equipment, water, lunch, and return transportation to Grand Canyon Airport. A certified river pilot will man each tour. Getting a good guide is essential to truly understanding the area through which you’ll be rafting.

Be prepared for the weather. Vegas and South Rim trips are hot during summer so make sure you’ve packed a hat, sunglasses, sun block, a long-sleeved shirt and water (also provided with the tour). Bring lip balm, a set of dry clothes and sandals that are suitable for river rafting. Do expect to get wet.

Smooth water trips are a great way for families and groups to enjoy the Grand Canyon together. Kids as young as 4 years old can participate. These trips are all-day affairs, so make sure to plan accordingly. I strongly recommend booking your tour in advance because these tours fly off the shelves during the summer.
