Some plants, especially climbers such as clematis, wisteria and honey suckle; produce long, flexible shoots that can be layered several times along their length. The stem is buries at several points along its length, with the growing tip out of the ground, as for simple layering. As they grow, carefully earth up the side shoots, leaving at least two inches of shoot exposed until a ridge of soil about six inches high has been created. Separate and plant out layers once rooted. A few plants, notably black berries and hybrid berries, can be easily propagated by tip layering.
This is a process whereby the tip of a suitably place shoot is pegged into prepared soil and left until it roots. A rooting hormone is not essential, but it should increase the success rate. Moisten the bases of the cuttings in water then dip them into a rooting powder. You can use liquid or gel rooting hormones, in which case there is no need to dip the end in water first. Treat only the base of each cutting. Make a slit trench by pushing a spade into the ground and levering it backwards and forwards.
The trench should be a little shallower than the length of the cuttings. Choose an unobtrusive spot in the garden to leave the cuttings undisturbed for a year. Sprinkle some grit or coarse sand in the base of the slit trench if the ground is poorly drained. This will help to prevent water logging around the cuttings. Insert the cuttings 3 to 4 inches apart, making sure that they are upright against the back of the slit and leaving about 2 to 4 inches above the ground. Firm the soil around the cuttings, to eliminate the pockets of air that would cause the cuttings to dry out. You need to water and label it regularly. Remember to water in dry weather.
