T-Shirt Printing Tips – How To Create Your Own Personalized Shirts Online
T-shirt printing – 3 things to keep mainly in mind. These three inexpensive tips are easy to follow, simple to use and will give you a lot of satisfaction when you wear your personalized shirts soon.
Let’s start with the end in mind. Instead of rushing out and ordering shirts online to be printed I suggest starting with the end in mind.
Why do you want to print a shirt? For work or for a birthday party? Maybe it’s for a fun run soon or just as a gift for someone? Could it be like a memory of a recent trip?
Each of these above events can result in the selection of a different garment for the wearer to remember. Maybe the climate around you can dictate what you wear. It is important to keep this in mind while deciding to print designs on shirts. A hoodie as a gift in summer may not be as acceptable as a collared T-shirt. So let’s get started!
Tip 1: Why Do You Want to Print Your Own T-Shirt?
This is an important question because it will lead us to the purpose of the shirt, the fabric it is made of, and whether it is a Jersey or Hoodie for winter wear or a Sleeveless T-shirt or Scoop Neck shirt for a hot summer event.
Let me give you three examples here to help you understand how this planning stage is very important before you run off to buy random shirts online.
Example One! Let’s imagine you’re planning a weekend getaway with the boys soon. It’s all about the groom as it’s his big day out with the guys. The group of friends decide that the theme will be around the groom’s football team.
The decision is that everyone will wear a shirt custom printed with characters from the foot idols with a twist. Each foot player will be made as a cartoon instead of using the images of the players. This could be a great party with even bigger shirts. Get a graphic designer to come up with some character sketches for the whole party.
Example Two! You have an outdoor event happening around fitness. Your gym club needs shirts with logos printed on the front and back as well as the sleeves. The club wants a polyester shirt and needs the shirts to be cost effective. Now since the shirts are not cotton I suggest thinking about screen printing the logos and designs on the T-shirts instead of digitally printing the images. To get the best prices, most printers suggest that a minimum of 20 shirts should be printed at one time. So, once you’ve got your t-shirts sorted, all you need to do is go to tip #2 to print quality t-shirts.
Example Three! Imagine you are planning a birthday party for a 6-year-old girl. 30 kids are coming and you want shirts to match the party theme. You can either go for a T-shirt or a sweatshirt to suit the kids. Ordering in bulk will be cost effective for you as most printing companies offer discounts for large bulk orders. Once you know what the target is for its time to move on to tip #2 below.
Once the type of shirt is known now it’s time to decide what you like printed on top. We have a choice of images, designs or TEXT. Here we will focus on the image or photo that we will print on the garment. This leads us to Tip #2.
Tip 2: Which Image Sizes Are Best for Printing?
I find that most people who contact me to print their T-shirts don’t have the proper photo size to begin with. What most people do is they grab free images from Google or Facebook. While these graphics may look good on a small screen, they are rarely the right size to print on a much larger surface such as a t-shirt or jumper.
The images from the internet are reduced in size and are approximately 96 dpi resolution or approximately 5 cm by 5 cm in size. These images will not be large enough to even look good on the breast pocket of your polo business shirts.
If you tried to stretch the image across the back or front of the Tee, you would get a pixelated image printed due to the poor quality of the image you used.
The solution goes for large file size images. The recommended resolution for good images is at least 300 dpi or about 30 cm by 30 cm in size. Three times what is mentioned above. These are large files and if expanded will easily produce great quality printed shirts when you print the graphics onto the garments.
There are many websites that offer great images for a small fee. Here are 3 paid sites I recommend:
-
SHUTTERSTOCK.com
-
GETTYIMAGES.com.au
-
DEPOSITPHOTOS.com
Some free sites to capture your designs are:
-
BURST by SHOPIFY
-
FOR FREE
-
PEXELS
Useful Points to Consider When Choosing an Image.
Always make sure you don’t use images without the permission of the person who created them. Google below to make sure you choose the right images without any problems.
What is a Creative Commons? Creative Commons is a non-profit business group that helps with the distribution and use of creativity and knowledge through free tools that are legal to use. Now the use under Creative Commons licenses is from full use of the images you want to use to no attribution to allowing only certain uses and making no changes to the images used. Make sure you understand the licenses before you use images if you’re looking for free graphics on the web.
What is public domain? Works in the public domain are those whose copyrights have expired, have been lost, or are unenforceable. Finding something on the internet does not mean it is in the public domain. Again it is your responsibility to ensure that you select copyright free images.
What are unauthorized images? Most copyright-free images are not necessarily free. In many cases, all you have to do is purchase the images for a small one-time fee, so that you then have the rights to use the image for your own purposes. You are free to use the images as often as you like. The “free” in “rights-free” just means that you don’t have to pay a royalty to the owner of the image every time you use it. For extensive reading on royalty free images, check out this guide by Amos Struck.
Tip 3: How Do I Choose The Right Color Of Shirt To Choose?
We went through deciding the occasion for which the shirt will be used. These could be the party we talked about earlier, or it could be a team event for a local fitness club or even a birthday party for a 5-year-old.
We then went off and got some great pictures from the internet using either the free or paid sites I mentioned above. So the last step is to choose the type of T-shirt and the brand we want for our event soon.
If it’s a night out in a cooler climate, we should consider either using a full-sleeved T-shirt or even a hoodie or sweater to print your photos on. For warmer tropical climates use a sleeveless shirt if it’s a beach party or a half-sleeve shirt with a crew cut for comfort. Good brands are AS COLOR or GILDAN to name a few.
Make sure the shirts are 100% cotton as these make better printed shirts. They are much more comfortable to wear.
Choose The Shirt Colors!
Now we choose the colors of the clothes on which you plan to print. Always use contrasting colors as your guide.
What do I mean by this? If you would have images with lighter or darker colors, go for a lighter colored shirt. Avoid using a dark image on a black or navy blue shirt. Choose a white shirt or a lighter shade of blue to print the images on. Your prints will stand out on the Tees and you will be very happy with the end result.
Conclusion! In summary we went through the T-shirt printing process to identify why or where you will wear the garment. Then we found images suitable for the occasion. Finally we looked for a T-shirt that has the right color to show the best results with the printed shirts after the T-shirts are printed. I hope these tips help you create great printed t-shirts.
