Kiteboarding For a Workout

Most of the pictures you see of kitesurfing from around the world depict the same old scenes. They usually show a large wave swallowing a person. Or they show a young, ripped, tanned, wet and wild professional Kiter in the middle of some death-defying maneuver. You can all relax, I assure you all those images are coming from the top two percent of our sport. In fact, about sixty percent of kiteboarders are over 30 years old. It is true. I taught over two hundred lessons and sixty sixty percent of my clients were over thirty years old. Amazingly I even taught men and women in their mid sixties. The truth is most young people don’t have the time or resources to really get into the sport. The age group in which I have taught this sport is 12 years old to over sixty years young. That teaches me one thing that kitesurfing is a lifelong sport just like skiing, cycling, sailing or bowling. But how does it benefit your health and or fitness level?

It is the physical sport itself. Kiteboarding suspends you above the water from a harness that fits snugly around your waist. A respected colleague of mine says it’s like wakeboarding in a hammock. I agree. The power of your kite is so great that holding it with just your arms would be foolish. So a comfortable harness dissociates the energy evenly over your entire back and core. The first thing you will feel the next day is a tighter stomach. That’s because while riding or standing on the beach or drifting in the water you engage your core for balance. Using all the small stabilizer muscles during a two-hour session strengthens all the small muscles that you rarely use on a day-to-day basis, and this relieves the pain of the overused groups that make you feel better. But it also stretches and tones your core without you having to do a single sit-up. In fact you don’t need a diet, or a contour belt, or an ab maker plus gimmicks. You train while gliding over the water in a hammock. That sounds better than a gym, diet, indoor exercise machine. So you lose a few inches off your waist after a year of kitting, what else does it offer?

While you’re on the water, you get a great leg workout. When you are on the water, you must lean back on your heels. The power of the kite is great, it will pull you on your face, so we lean back to compensate, just like Newton learned; to be balanced you must have an opposite and equal force to the force currently acting on you. To equalize the power of the kite you put body weight down on your heels. So this is very similar to leg press doping. The more power you have in your kite, the bigger the leg. Unlike doing reps like in a gym, you suspend a leg press for as long as you want. I can set a hard edge for five minutes and my thighs, hamstrings and calves will all be on fire. But I can choose not to work as hard to conserve energy. So now you can get a leg workout without running, lift in the gym or bounce to a Caribbean jazz-dance troupe on your TV. Instead you’ll be the kiteboarder in the background of that Caribbean troupe, and having more fun than any of those dancers I can guarantee. Core is good, legs are good, what are arms?

I hear a lot of potential Kithers worry that it looks hard on your arms and shoulders. Fortunately, they are all wrong. It looks as if you are holding the kite with your arms. Really you hold the kite with all your body weight from your waist, not your arms. We control the kite with a joystick, which we manipulate with our hands. But I assure you that your arms will be the last part of your body that hurts from kitesurfing. You see, by holding the power of the kite through the harness it takes all the pressure off our arms. Without the harness I’m sure, without a doubt, that kitesurfing would be an intense arm workout. So far I haven’t mentioned much about the professional world of kitesurfing. In that world there are certain maneuvers that involve a lot of shoulder and back strength. But remember, the professional world is about two percent of the total. Now we have covered the whole body. Kitesurfing is an effective core and leg workout. You have the opportunity to work your shoulders and back, but can choose not to. That sounds like most trips I make to the gym. people working on legs and core and avoiding shoulder and back work. So you can go ahead and do the exact same thing, without a membership fee, you can be out in the water having fun to boot.

It is inevitable that I mention a general disclaimer. All physical activities break down your body. It doesn’t matter what you do. Extreme sports like skiing, snowboarding, cycling, kayaking and the rest of the related activities will all break you eventually. I guess that means we each have to choose what activity we want to ruin ourselves with. when I look back, I mean fun outdoor water sports like kiteboarding, and not having my answer be the gym lifting, or my living room dancing to Zumba fitness.
