Bored With Your Scrapbooking? Nine Ways to Liven Up Your Pages

Bored of your scrapbooking pages? Then you’re probably in a bit of a rut, making the same old designs, with the same old products, over and over again. Instead of consigning yourself to an eternity of misery, here are nine ways to breathe some life back into your favorite pastime:

1. Take your show on the road. Attend an event like a harvest or craft night at your church, the local scrapbook store, or even just a friend’s house. Getting out of your normal place and connecting with other creative types will revitalize you.

2. Mix it up. If you always start with the photo, then choose a card, and then start planning your page, start somewhere else. Try pulling out products you love and designing your page around a special decoration or page accent.

3. Take a class. Learning a new skill or technique can make you itch to scrapbook. When I first learned to distress paper edges, I was a distressed fool! I think I even distressed the edges of the checks when I paid bills (just kidding!).

4. Exchange photos with a friend. Tired of your kids’ faces? Maybe you need some new inspiration! Exchange photos with a friend and create a page for her. If nothing else, the page she makes for you will offer something different for your album.

5. Take a challenge. Set yourself a time limit per page, or tell yourself you’ll only use products you’ve had for more than a year. Find some kind of competition to do with yourself. Sometimes you just need a different perspective on your supplies.

6. Never say never. Try something you’ve never done before in a scrapbook layout, whether it’s embossing a stamped title or digitally enhancing your photos. Open the box you drew around you.

7. Roll the dice. For each step of your page creation, give yourself two choices (two different colors of card stock, two different photo options, two different sets of alphabet stickers, etc.). Take the dice from your Monopoly set and give them a roll. If the resulting number is odd, choose option A; even means that option B wins. Crazy, but fun!

8. Scraplift yourself. Find a really old layout you’ve done (some of mine are 10 years old!), and recreate it with current products and photos. What do you think of the result?

9. Delete your favorites. One thing that never fails to inspire me is creating a page of my favorites — a book, a movie, a shoe, whatever. You can make an entire arrangement about one favorite thing, or a border arrangement about a whole bunch of favorites. Focusing on things you love will help pull you out of your slump.
