Car Games – Good Or Bad?
Are Today’s Car Games Teaching Kids to Drive Recklessly? I have absolutely nothing against car games or any kind of game be it shooting, mmorpg, action or war game. They are fun and totally addicting but sometimes it makes you wonder.
I’m a huge fan of car games whether it’s online, consoles like the Xbox, playstation or PC/Mac games. But lately I’ve been thinking are these types of games teaching our kids inappropriate messages about how to drive a car? Should we be worried? Maybe.
I noticed something the other day watching my 8 year old nephew, he had just finished playing what I think is an absolutely great car racing game called Need for Speed 2, what puzzled me was what he asked me after he had just finished his game – “Uncle Warren. Can I drive your car and race my dad?” At first I thought it was fun and innocent, but it wasn’t until I told my wife about it that it raised some concerns.
My wife was like Oh my God I hope he doesn’t have that attitude when he grows up and gets his license! This really made me think if these car games are affecting how we think we should drive cars, if they are delivering a message to kids and teenagers to drive recklessly. Could this be the reason why there are so many crashes and deaths on the road today that there are? growing year after year?
So if this is a problem, how do we solve it? Do we cut games altogether or should we think smarter while developing games and provide ads before and during the games showing real accidents of reckless driving, speeding and stupidity while driving a car. Maybe even show some educational video game on how to drive safely. How about educational car games that teach kids and teens how to drive and make it exciting and fun to play to keep them interested.
The next time you visit an online gaming site or play a video game, think about how it could affect our children. Do the ratings really fit the game they are playing?
