Getting the Most Out of Your Campfire Singing

Campfire singing can be a spontaneous, spur-of-the-moment activity, or a well-organized program. Some of the best campfire singing was spontaneous as well as planned.

My brothers and sister and their families sat around the campfire after a nice day of fishing at Island Park or Henry’s Lake (near West Yellowstone). Brad, my brother, would grab his guitar; I would play banjo or guitar. Mom would ask us to sing “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad.” Then we would sing “You Are My Sunshine”. Mom likes to sing harmony on those songs. We would end up singing several songs. I can figure out chords to go along with most camp songs, so we don’t usually take music.

Having been involved in scouts for many years, I helped organize singing for scout jamborees. They weren’t much more organized than our family campfire singing.

If you want to have a good experience, I would suggest that you organize yourself beforehand. Start by asking someone to play the guitar to accompany the group. Pick a handful of campfire songs and tell them ahead of time. Get them a copy of the music.

For added depth, have several people bring their accompanying instruments such as guitars, banjos, mandolins and ukuleles. You can use any combination of the above mentioned instruments. You can even add a vial.

If you choose to use a violin or other melodic instrument, they can play the melody while the band sings. They could also play the melody alone.

Make sure the instrumentalists take a few minutes to tune in with each other. Maybe I’m being stubborn about this, but I’m sure there will be some in the group who will be upset if they don’t tune in.

The instrumentalists will most likely want copies of the music. It’s possible they have the songs memorized, or they can play by ear, but that’s not very likely for most musicians.

What if they can’t read music? If they read tablature, you can get them the music in tab form. My website, found in the BIO box below, will have a tablature within the next few weeks that you can download. You might Google the song in a tab and find it like this.

If your singalong will include many people, say 30 or more, you may want to use more than one guitar or other accompanying instrument. You may also want to do this if the group is spread out. The more people you have, the more instruments you’ll want to use so they can be heard.

You could also use electric guitars when you’re accompanying a big band. If you do, is there electricity on site? See if you can find a current bush! You can use a generator, but they are a bit loud, and would distract from the campfire. You would probably be better off singing a unaccompanied. I would personally recommend that you use only acoustic instruments, and use a bunch. It just doesn’t seem right to me to use an electric guitar outside in the great outdoors. But I have to admit I’ve done it myself a few times. If you do, just be mindful of other campers. Most people go camping to get away from it all. If you’re going camping to get away from it all, make sure you don’t take everything with you!

Most important: have fun. Don’t take it too seriously and enjoy the journey!
