Basic Leopard Gecko Supplies
The type of leopard gecko supplies you will get is totally at your discretion. You can provide your gecko with a simple cage that meets the minimum requirement of a good habitat, but you can also put your gecko in a luxurious customized cage that is fully equipped with exquisite decorations to pamper your gecko. It’s really up to you.
If you don’t have budget constraints, you can buy all the necessary supplies brand new in pet stores. But you can get those supplies in a less expensive way by using old or unused items like old aquariums, shoes or Tupperware tubs. With a little creativity and modification you can make these things work satisfactorily and look nice too.
However, you should recognize the basic supplies needed to meet the minimum requirement to keep and maintain a healthy chicken. Here is the list:
Vivarium/tank/cage/enclosure– The comfortable volume is a tank of 10 gallons or a minimum size of 24″X12″X12″ for an adult gecko. You may need a tank of 15 gallons for a pair and 20 gallons for two pairs if you want to keep several geckos and plan to raise your chickens
Wire mesh or screen top– This is usually included with the cage and should be made of wire mesh to provide good ventilation and sufficient light.
Gecko safe substrate– This substrate must be non-irritating and non-abrasive materials such as artificial grass, newspapers and paper towels.
Hiding box, humid box– Hiding box is where your gecko will spend most of its time. You will need 2 hidden boxes. Place one on the moist and warm side, above where you place the Sub Tank Heater and the other box on the drier and cooler side of the tank A moist or humid box is the 3rd hidden box with some sphagnum- moss to preserve moisture.
Rough decorations– This is the interior of the tank, which includes climbing rocks or logs, wood or shells that can be used to rub the gecko’s skin during shedding and artificial plants. Live and non-toxic plants are also useful for creating a humid environment. Make sure those climbing accessories are firmly attached to the bottom of the tank to prevent your gecko from falling.
Thermometers and thermostat– Two thermometers are needed to control temperature on both sides of temperature gradients, while the thermostat is to control the required temperature. It is necessary to provide different temperature gradients to allow your gecko to choose the desired body temperature.
Light and timer, dome lamp and black or red reptile bulb – These are the supplies to provide adequate lighting for your gecko. This artificial lighting is not necessary if you could place your gecko tank in places with sufficient natural light. If artificial is needed, set your timer for 12 hours on and 12 hours off.
Plates or bowls– These are needed to put the water, mealworms and calcium powder. Choose the appropriate size and depth. The water bowl should be easy for the gecko to dip into and drink from without drowning
Under Tank Heater or UTH– This is an extra heat source placed under one side of the tank. The recommended temperature range is 80 – 85F during the day and around 70F at night.
Mist spray bottle to moisten the humidity box– This is simply a spray bottle that is used to spray only the humidity box, not necessarily the whole tank
food-The common food for your gecko is live mealworms. Other foods that can be prepared include crickets, cockroaches and silkworms. Remember to load all of these live foods 24 hours before feeding your gecko to ensure the health of your lizard.
Supplements– The powdered form of calcium powder and vitamin D3 sprinkled on live food before feeding your chicken.
So, that concludes the basic supplies of caring leopard geckos. Again, these supplies do not have to be the expensive and brand new ones. As a beginner it is good to start with something simple and less expensive. Estimate to get yourself a nice natural cage with all those basic supplies will be around $100 to $150.
Happy gecko care!
