How Do Children Learn to Be Respectful?

In the 1970s when my children were very young, in my home hung the wall of Dorothy Law Nolte with the poem: CHILDREN LEARN WHAT THEY LIVE. Some of the lines of this poem are as follows:

If children live with sharing, they learn generosity.

If children live with righteousness, they learn righteousness.

If children live with kindness and consideration,

they learn respect.

A few years ago, Dorothy’s book, Children Learn What They Live Forcrossed my path, and again I remembered the great truth in her words.

There’s the old saying: Actions are worth 1,000 words!

I believe this is very true. So, how do we teach children to be respectful? I do believe they learn it first by showing kindness, consideration and respect. Because they are shown kindness, they learn kindness. As they are shown consideration, they learn to be considered. As they are shown respect, they learn respect.

It’s the little things that make a difference. If you want your child to treat you with respect, notice how you treat your child in small everyday ways. No doubt, if you have a child who is respectful, you probably treat him/her with kindness, consideration. The challenge sometimes comes when a child acts disrespectfully towards you. For some reason, many times, our buttons are pushed and we react. However, if you have a practice of staying centered, then you can come from your “core” and not react in the same way you were treated. Someone once said: Children are our Spiritual Teachers. So true!

Maybe if your child had a hard day at school and mentions something about it, you might stop what you’re doing at that moment and sit down with your child and allow him to share with you everything that happened. A powerful connection happens if you can be in the “MOMENT” with your child when he/she needs to talk!!

When you leave to run an errand, do you tell our child that you are going, here we go and when you expect to return, that is if he/she is old enough to be left alone? Once I was teaching piano in a home, and the 12-year-old went to ask her Mom. She was nowhere! Such actions to take provide a secure foundation for a child. And later, when a child takes off for school or to go to a friend’s house, you may be angry with them for not telling you first.

If children are shown genuine kindness and consideration by those closest to them, especially their parents, I do believe they will return it.

Children are being asked to grow up so fast today and need the tools to do so. Education about the things you expect from them is essential if they are to succeed in fulfilling them. Before they can organize their bedroom or playroom on their own, they need to observe and talk about the process and learn to do with you! If your child’s bedroom/playroom is a mess, you could say, “How would you like me to grab some boxes and this Saturday we organize your room together?”

Many times I see that children love to help. At the same time, they also have some ideas about how they want to organize their room. It’s been my experience that when I show kids that I’m on THEIR side, and really want to support them, they welcome help.

As we sincerely treat children with kindness, consideration and respect, we will see that it is returned to us 100%.

Amina MacLeod, a young woman who wrote a column on children’s rights at the age of 13 and a former guest of mine on The Family Hour, states: “It is very important to give children a space to express their feelings, emotions and thoughts without fear of any consequences or consequences. They need a space to say whatever they want, whether it’s ambition, school, care or concern. Every child needs a safe place to be who they are.”

As you listen to a child, and hear him or her with your body, mind and soul, you will be able to respond with your body, mind and soul. This creates heart to heart communication, a heart warming experience.

It’s not always easy, because sometimes they will challenge you! It’s not always easy, because sometimes they can question you! It’s not easy, because sometimes they might be right! Over the years, when I have said to my children “I think you are right”, I have been overwhelmed with JOY and the empathy that is returned to me afterwards.

If we approach life as a journey, knowing that we are all here to learn and teach, we will be more open to hearing what the TRUTH really is, and not just trying to be “right”. The quality of RESPECT is shared! And when life is lived with such intention, life becomes JOYFUL!
