What To Do When You Can’t Sleep: Honey and Cinnamon
I couldn’t sleep last night.
Nothing I tried worked so I finally gave up and got up. I had popcorn and watched a movie. When I tried again shortly after 2am, I still couldn’t fall asleep. I don’t know what time it was when I finally passed out, but I certainly wasn’t ready to get up this morning.
A lack of sleep results in a lack of ambition. I managed to put off most of the things I had intended to do today – like mowing the lawn.
Lack of concentration can also be caused by lack of sleep. I was browsing online – on a forum for Baby Boomers. I saw a thread called “Older people and sleep problems”. Now, I would usually take exception to the word “older”. At 60, I don’t consider myself old – except for a night like last night.
Whenever my son tries to talk me into doing something I don’t really want to do, he says, “Come on, Mom – you’re only as old as you feel.” I feel ancient today.
Anyway, I thought I’d read the posts about older people’s sleep problems, but when I tried to click on the thread, either my concentration or hand-eye coordination failed, and I ended up clicking on the thread above it.
It was called “Health Benefits of Honey and Cinnamon”.
Well, sometimes you have to play the hand you’re dealt or run with the ball you’re dealt.
Honey and cinnamon seem to have a long tradition as herbal remedies for a number of ailments. It is said to be beneficial in preventing heart attacks and reducing arthritis pain. The dosage is one cup of hot water, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon and 2 teaspoons of honey. Used every day, it is supposed to reduce inflammation.
Honey and cinnamon not only help with stomach problems and flu symptoms, but have been proven to strengthen the immune system to prevent viral and bacterial infections and significantly help white blood cells fight disease.
When used in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle, daily use of both ingredients 3-4 times a day has been recommended to help eliminate many older (there’s that word again!) problems, maintain good health, and live a longer life.
In addition, there is evidence that fat formation is prevented if one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon mixed in a cup of boiled water is taken regularly before breakfast and before bed, as it helps to reduce weight – even in obese people!
In some cases, honey and cinnamon have been shown to be effective anti-cancer agents – partly due to their ability to boost the immune system as well as their cleansing properties.
Finally, honey used as a paste is helpful in soothing rashes and skin eruptions, from simple pimples to more serious eczema and even skin conditions.
The only benefit the thread didn’t mention is that a spoonful of honey in a cup of warm milk with a pinch of nutmeg (but cinnamon would probably work too) can help you sleep. Imagine that!
