Healthy Weight For Children

Recent studies show that most adults in the United States are overweight or obese. Even children are becoming more and more difficult.

If you’re a parent, it’s your responsibility to help your child (as well as everyone in your family) develop healthy eating and physical activity habits.

By improving the eating and exercise habits of your whole family, you can help prevent your child from becoming overweight and obese.

As a parent, you are the most important role model for your child. There is a good chance that your child will choose to eat right and be physically active if you model these behaviors. Many parents use this opportunity to spend more quality time together.

Overweight and obese children can suffer from serious health problems such as:

…asthma

…heart disease

…Type 2 diabetes

…low self-esteem

…sleep problems

Many children will not grow out of being overweight if they were overweight and/or obese during their teenage years.

It’s not always easy to tell if your child is overweight because children grow at different rates. The definition of overweight is different for adults than it is for children and adolescents.

You can calculate your child’s body mass index (BMI), which will indicate that your child’s weight is out of range. Search online to find a free BMI calculator. Simply enter your child’s height, weight and date of birth (BMI will come with full instructions).

Children need to know that they are loved no matter what their weight is. Reassure your child that you want to help them stay healthy and feel good about their bodies.

Make it a point to help your child get at least one hour of physical activity each day. This can include fun activities throughout the day such as playing tag or hide and seek.

Other activities may include:

…aerobic activities such as running, jumping rope or dancing

…muscle-strengthening activities such as climbing trees or equipping playgrounds

…bone-strengthening activities such as jumping rope or playing basketball

As a parent and leader of your family, you should turn activation into a family project:

…encourage your child to choose and lead family activities

…try walking the dog together or cycling to the library

…keep a record of your family activities on the fridge

…look for more ideas to increase your daily activity

As a parent, you are responsible for telling when and for how long your child can play video games or watch TV. Limit this time to a maximum of 2 hours each day so that your child has the opportunity to be more physically active.

You should give your child plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Become an expert at reading nutrition labels on all food products. You may consider:

…serving water or low-fat milk instead of juice or soda

…instead of eating at fast food restaurants, prepare nutritious meals at home

…discover ways you can make your favorite recipes healthier. Try adding more vegetables and using low-fat milk

…help your child understand when he has had enough. Encourage your child to stop eating when they feel full

Your child will eat more fruits and vegetables when you eat together. Prepare healthy meals and enjoy them together. Encourage your child to participate in grocery shopping, meal preparation, and setting/cleaning the table.

You’ve heard it before… breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You wouldn’t attempt to drive your vehicle without some kind of fuel. Don’t let your child start the day without some kind of fuel.

And finally, encourage your child to get enough sleep. Your child needs 9 to 11 hours of sleep every day. Getting enough sleep can reduce your child’s risk of being overweight or obese.
