Book Review – Born to Kill – The Rise and Fall of America’s Bloodiest Asian Gang – By T.J. English
It was a steamy summer day in 1990, and more than 100 Asian gang members and their families gathered at Rosedale Memorial Park Cemetery in Linden, New Jersey, to bury 21-year-old Vinh Vu, the No. 2 leader of the violent Born to Kill Gang (BTK).
Suddenly three men in long cloaks covering the automatic weapons they were carrying approached. These men then did the unthinkable: they opened fire on the mourners and pandemonium ensued. Frightened people ran in all directions, including gang leader David Thai and 19-year-old Vietnamese refugee Tinh Ngo, known to his cohorts as Timmy. More than 100 shots were fired into the crowd. Five mourners were injured, but shockingly, none were killed.
Tinh, like most typical teenage gang members, had no family in America and gravitated to the predominantly Vietnamese BTK gang for the same reason as the other gang members: he wanted a sense of family in a foreign country—people he could trust and converse with in his native language. Tinh never realized that he would be drawn into a viper’s nest where the 34-year-old Thai man would order his subordinates to commit violent crimes (shakedowns, robberies and even murders) against other Asian immigrants – people who traditionally never report crimes to the police.
Tinh did his first dirty deed when he was involved in holding up a Chinese brothel in Chinatown. Even though Tinh didn’t like the carp, it still gave him a sense of excitement knowing he was now “one of the gang”. As he committed robbery after robbery, Tinh gradually began to question whether this life of violence was meant for him.
David Thai sent his underlings all over America to carry out their mayhem. In late 1990, Thai directed the BTK group, including Tinha, to Doraville, Georgia to rob a Chinese curio store owned by Odum Lin. Lin, unimpressed by the barely shaven gangsters, resisted and was shot in the side of the head.
Lin miraculously survived, but Tinh didn’t know the owner was still alive; he thought he was part of the murder. This senseless shooting sent Tinho into overdrive, and when he was arrested soon after on a minor charge, he was met by a group of investigators, both federal and New York City, trying to build a case against the Borns. to the Kill Gang, specifically leader David Thai.
Tired of gang life, Tinh turned around easily and, under the guidance of New York Detective Bill Oldham, ATF Special Agent Dan Kumor, and Assistant US Attorney Alan Vinegrad, began wearing wires during his encounters with Thai and other top BTK gangs. members.
In Born to Kill, TJ English, former New York taxi driver and author of another great book – The Westies, gives us a vivid account of Tinh’s confidential activities that decimated the Born to Kill Gang. Tinh’s inside information was so accurate; Kumor and Oldham even managed to foil several BTK robberies before they happened.
At first, Tinh was afraid to wear the wire. On one occasion, while Tinh was sitting in the living room of a safe house watching television with several other BTKs, another gang member noticed a red glow inside Tinh’s shirt. The glow was the light from the battery on his tape recorder strapped to his chest.
Thinking that he was now a dead man, Tinh rushed to the bathroom, removed the recorder, and then crept back into the living room to await his fate. Amazingly, the other gang member was glued to the TV and barely noticed Tinh leave the room and come back. Tinh muttered something about a bad beeper to a gang member who noticed the red light; the gang member bought Tinh’s explanation and Tinh was safe – for now.
After Thai attempts to involve his gang in a heist in concert with Italian mobsters from New Jersey, again thwarted by Tinho’s inside knowledge of the impending event, Oldham, Kumor, and Vinegrad decide it is too dangerous for Tinho to remain undercover. They took Tinh off the streets and began prosecuting Thai and other top BTK operatives. This resulted in the Thai man being sentenced to life behind bars without the chance of parole.
