Is Frontier Airlines a Pandemic Profiteer?
Last fall, my little brother, who was battling cancer, was taken to the hospital by ambulance. His caregiver called the family to tell us he only had a few days to live. My 83-year-old aunt helped support him when his illness prevented him from traveling. My other brother also had health problems and could not travel. I am 63 and was laid off a few years ago. Finding a well-paying job when you are over 60 is difficult. I drive Uber to earn money so my budget is very limited. He’s my brother, so I made the emergency trip to Ohio to see him one last time and represent the family. He lingered for a while and died on November 10, 2020.
My sister-in-law called in January. She wanted to throw a birthday party for my aunt who will be on May 1st 84. Even though I didn’t pay for the trip to see my brother, I agreed to fly back to Ohio for her party. At 83, we don’t know how much longer he will be with us. Life is very uncertain during the pandemic and she is in a very high risk group. The gathering will give us an opportunity to celebrate her life and grieve my brother.
I will be purchasing a ticket with Frontier Airlines on January 11, 2020.
I was hoping to only stay 1 day for the party but had to book 3 days to get a cheaper ticket. I wouldn’t be able to drive for Uber in those days. I would take a big hit in my income for that week. My loss of income combined with the cost of the trip would be over $1000, but family is important. It would be good to see them again.
News of the coronavirus has started coming out of China. They incarcerated 500 million people, more than the entire population of the United States. On January 31, President Trump blocked travel from China. The news got worse and worse and I began to worry about traveling on a plane with a highly contagious disease ravaging the country.
On February 27th, Frontier notified me that they were canceling my original reservation, presumably because they didn’t have enough passengers to make the flight. They wanted to reschedule my flights. I called them to tell them I didn’t want the change. I wanted to wait to see if I could plan a shorter trip so I wouldn’t miss 3 days of work. Frontier said they would issue a 90 day voucher so I could reschedule later.
The first US citizen died of the coronavirus on February 29. The infection spread rapidly. I thought it would be wise to wait to translate. On March 17, California’s governor announced a stay-at-home order. Other states across the country quickly announced their own stay-at-home orders. Frontier finally stopped flying altogether during the month of April. I couldn’t reschedule my flight even if I wanted to.
On April 3, the Department of Transportation ruled that airlines must refund customers if their flights have been canceled. Many airlines did not comply, so the Department of Transport issued another warning on 12 May 2020. This was unprecedented.
I have not been working since March 17. The government said gig workers like me could get $600/week but that didn’t happen. For 3 months I had no income except a $1200 stimulus check. I contacted Frontier and asked them to refund my $336. They didn’t provide any service and couldn’t because they weren’t flying when my flight was scheduled.
Frontier refused. Not only will they not refund my money, I only have until June 2nd to schedule a flight with them or I will lose my money. They keep $336 for doing nothing.
Is Frontier profiting from the pandemic? I would definitely make the trip if there wasn’t a highly contagious pandemic. They were shut down in April, it was impossible for me to use their services at all if I wanted to. I feel like I should be entitled to a refund. Their representative Lulu Zaldivar told me they would not refund my money. They claim that even though they canceled my original flight and tried to change it, I was the one who canceled the flight and I am not entitled to a refund as ordered by the Ministry of Transport.
Do you think this is fair?
