Don’t Throw Your 35mm Film Canisters Away – Recycle Them for Decorations
Most of us remember taking lots of pictures with 35mm cameras and somehow amassing a large collection of those little airtight, sealed canisters that the film came in. Maybe it’s because I’m a self-proclaimed rat or because of my creative nature, but over the years I’ve started to collect a number of those little canisters that the film came in and put them in my bag thinking “someday I’ll find use”.
I have created a craft project for you to do with your kids or as a group project. It would actually work with any small canister with a sealed cap if you don’t have film canisters stored, I just had a bag of film waiting for a reason to exist. So keep those little canisters and here’s a way to recycle them, have fun with your kids and teach them a craft project.
Needs:
- A film canister or similar small canister with a lid
- Household glue, Glue gun or preferred glue
- Sharp scissors (adults only if there are younger children)
- Loose glitter sequins the size of a pencil eraser
- Pretty Ribbon (about 6″ for each ornament)
Instructions:
- Remove the cover from the foil canister.
- Cut an approximately 6″ piece of ribbon with scissors. Folded in half, this will be a hanger for your decoration.
- Use scissors to poke a hole in the center of the cover large enough for the ribbon to pass through.
- Put one end of the ribbon through the hole in the cover and tie a knot in that end big enough to keep it from slipping back through the cover.
- Repeat this step with the other end of the tape. You should now have a loop sticking out of the hole in the film canister cover.
- Using glue or glue, place several pieces around the inside of the cover. Snap the cover back onto the film container. You should now have a foil canister with a loop.
- Find a place to hang the canister, this will make it easier to access all surfaces at the same time. Using glue or glue (I prefer the easy use of a glue gun) adhere the sequins in place, to the cover around the ribbon, sides and bottom. The entire surface should be covered.
- Allow your creation to dry completely before using.
Note: I accidentally made an ornament for my Christmas tree, but you can use variations of colored sequins to create a hanging ornament for any holiday; such as decorating a tree branch etc.
