Best Bluetooth Speakers in 2011

Another year and another range of speakers released by a host of manufacturers. But this year there’s a difference: specifically, an extensive range of bluetooth speakers. While true audiophiles will probably scream in horror at the mere mention of wireless speakers (after all, cables perform better even if you can’t see it), for most consumers these wireless speakers—especially bluetooth speakers—are more than good enough to replace an old, cumbersome , cable line. Add to that the ubiquity of iPhones and iPod Touches, and you can see the appeal of bluetooth speakers: they’re easy to use, affordable, compact, and provide decent overall performance without any nasty bits (read: wires, heavy brick power, etc.).

So what are the best Bluetooth speakers for 2011?

If I had to pick one set of speakers that stand out for their versatility, I’d probably go with the Creative D100 and its older sibling the D200. These two speakers do everything right for me: they perform well, they’re not too expensive (I say that after burning thousands of dollars on different sets of speakers), and they look good. But for the sake of this article, I will list the four best Bluetooth speakers of 2011:

1. Creative D100 Wireless Bluetooth Speaker

As I mentioned above, this speaker set does a lot of things right: it looks good (it comes in five different colors, though I prefer the default black), it delivers more than enough power, it’s small and easy to carry, it runs on AA batteries, and it won’t burn you out a hole in the wallet.

But it’s not a perfect speaker. Not by a long shot (I’d probably look at Klipsch or Bose for that). The low end lacks a bit of punch and if you crank up the volume, there’s distortion. However, I’m assuming you won’t be using the Creative D100 to power your next house party. For all other purposes, this is a great and reliable speaker.

Pros: compact design, affordable, aesthetically pleasing, overall strong performance.

Cons: Bass sounds a bit weak; distortion at high volume

2. Monster ClarityHD Precision Micro Bluetooth Speaker

It was love at first sight with this speaker. How can you not fall in love with this little package bursting with features and performance? It’s no bigger than an iPhone in length, yet it can set the house on fire with its sound. I’ve seen 10 pound speakers that don’t perform as well.

Despite its compact design, the Monster ClarityHD is a very well-rounded speaker that works seamlessly with any Bluetooth device. Your iPhone or iPodTouch will instantly recognize it and stream all your music through it. The sound quality is amazing for such a small speaker – clear, strong mids and highs, little distortion even at high volumes. If you mainly listen to music via your smartphone (Android/iPhone/Blackberry) or iPod Touch, this speaker is the perfect choice.

Pros: Extremely compact design, clean, powerful playback, decent range.

Cons: As with all small speakers, it lacks powerful bass. The output volume is somewhat low.

3. Altec Lansing inMotion Soundblade Bluetooth speaker

Finally, a speaker that dispels the myth that Bluetooth speakers are only good for casual users. It costs a pretty penny, but turn it on and you’ll get crystal clear sound with amazing bass (thanks to SRS TruBass technology) that will blow your socks off. It looks sleek, is only one inch thick, and even includes a built-in microphone that doubles as a speakerphone.

The Altec Lansing inMotion is a modern Bluetooth device and its setup is a breeze. You can go from opening the package to streaming music on your iPhone in as little as 60 seconds. The performance is, frankly, stunning. It delivers sound that can rival a $400 Bose system and is, for all practical purposes, more than adequate for heavy-duty use in and out of the home.

The only downside I can think of (which made me put it here at #3) is the price. At $199.99, it costs the same as a new Netbook. But if you care about quality, you’ll love the Altec Lansing Soundblade.

Pros: Excellent sound quality, aesthetic, only an inch thick, strong bass and clear highs. Probably the best Bluetooth speaker around.

Cons: Expensive

4. SuperTooth Disco Bluetooth Speaker

It looks like a brick, is almost a foot long, and doesn’t quite have the Altec Lansing pedigree behind it. But turn it on and the SuperTooth Disco can give even a $300 Klipsch speaker a run for its money. The sound is surprisingly clear with a strong volume output. Pairing with a Bluetooth device is a matter of seconds and has a great Bluetooth range to boot.

The downside is that the large size makes it a bit difficult to carry around. While the Monster ClarityHD can be tossed in a purse, the SuperTooth Disco lacks a bit of teeth in the portability department. But if you want to use it primarily indoors, you will be very satisfied with the performance.

Pros: Strong performance, good Bluetooth range

Cons: Large and unwieldy design
