The History of Formula Milk

Despite recent critics, there can be no doubt that infant formula has saved countless lives over the years. The first successful milk formula was produced in the 1860s by Henri Nestle in Switzerland. It was based on cow’s milk and cereals and was the first scientific attempt to imitate mother’s milk.

It is not only in modern times that some mothers have difficulty producing enough breast milk to feed their baby: it has always been a problem and remains so. This inability to produce breast milk is more common in mothers who themselves have a poor diet and is a major problem for mothers living in poverty. It was while visiting mothers living in poverty and children in orphanages that Henri Nestle first decided to come up with a breast milk substitute. He eventually came up with a mixture he called farine lactee, based, as he said, on “whole Swiss milk and a grain ingredient roasted by a special process of my invention.” In 1867 he fed it to a premature baby boy whose mother was herself dangerously ill; the boy survived and Nestlé’s reputation skyrocketed. Nestlé’s main strength was not invention, he was an extremely good businessman and within 5 years of selling he had offices in London and exported the formula to South America and Australia.

Nestlé was not the only producer of artificial milk. Others included Justus von Liebig, Horlicks and Mellins Foods. The success of artificial milk based on sow’s milk owes everything to the massive advances in bacteriology made by Louis Pasteur and others, who made the handling of milk much safer than before.

The term “formula” is derived from Thomas Morgan Botch’s “percentage feeding” approach. He coined the term when he was trying to come up with the best mix of different ingredients that make up baby formula. A common basic formula at the time at Boston Children’s Hospital was 2-6-2, meaning 2% fat, 6% carbohydrates, and 2% protein. During the twentieth century, many commercial companies sought to improve dairy nutrition. Franklin Infant Food introduced in 1923 was a powdered formula, later called Similac. Enfamil, Mead Johnson, was a latecomer in 1959, but a company founded in 1905 and a pioneer in vitamin research in the 1920s with the first cod liver oil of standardized potency in 1924 and pure vitamin D solution in 1929.

There has been a lot of controversy with formula in recent years. Clever advertising campaigns led to millions of women feeding their babies formula rather than breast milk. While the negative effects in the West have been minimal (if any), the same cannot be said for mothers in the third world who bottle-feed their babies. The lack of basic safe, clean water has led to the deaths of millions of children who were fed contaminated formula. Despite many campaigns, the use of formula in the developing world appears to be a persistent problem.

The history of formula milk from a bottle is not very old and millions of women around the world use it amazingly. It is also a controversial history and its future seems controversial.
