Keep Sex Over the Top, Not Over the Hill

The movie Something’s Gotta Give with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton, both in their 60s, may have done more for the egos and sex lives of “mature lovers” than Viagra, Cialis or Levitra!

The scene where they have sex for the first time is both hilarious and touching, and speaks to the issues people over 50 face with their sexuality. He had just recently suffered a heart attack and she, divorced for years, had not had sex in a “long, long time”. Although their sexual performance was more comedic than erotic, it was outweighed by their endearing emotional desire for each other and the self-confidence that the experience restored. He learns that she still really likes sex, and he ends up crying, surprised and deeply moved by his second lease on life.

In the film, Diane’s character laments that she thought her sex life was permanently “closed for business”. I have several 55+ patients who are also worried that their personal shop is closed because they don’t seem to go there much anymore. do you feel that way?

As I tell my patients, sex should be a healthy part of your life for as long as you want. So let’s talk about some ways to maintain a vibrant sex life well into old age! First let me address the guys and talk about a common problem for men aged 50+, erectile dysfunction, and how it can affect your sexuality.

Do you really need one of these drugs?

We’ve gotten into a culture that pushes drugs onto television. More and more of my male patients “of a certain age” see TV commercials for Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra, think it’s a magic bullet, and ask me for a prescription. However, I prefer to advise my patients to first try some natural remedies for erectile dysfunction, such as the following:

Exercises: Many cases of erectile dysfunction occur due to reduced blood flow to the lower half of the body. Try aerobic exercise that uses your legs mostly like cycling, hiking, walking, playing golf, tennis for at least 30-45 minutes, 4 times a week to increase blood flow to the lower half of your body.

Poor nutrition/low testosterone: A diet lacking in zinc, protein, vitamin E and, surprisingly, cholesterol can lower testosterone levels, which can worsen ED. Fat helps create testosterone through cholesterol. A healthy testosterone boosting level is about 30-40 grams of fat per day! Studies show that diets higher in protein and lower in simple sugars also help build testosterone. Aim for at least 0.5 grams of protein for every pound of body weight. Additionally, supplements like Royal Maca contain natural plant sterols that increase testosterone and increase sperm levels in men. Stay away from soy because it contains plant estrogens that can lower testosterone and worsen ED. If you have been eating soy, chrysin, a bioflavonoid, will help rid your system of estrogen.

Mental health: Emotional problems can also cause erectile dysfunction. If you’re carrying around a lot of stress, which can be common these days, your sex life can suffocate under its weight. Sharing your feelings with an objective friend or counselor can give you a different perspective on things. It can really help you improve mentally and physically.

Disease: Diabetes, coronary artery disease (CAD), or prostate disease can cause erectile dysfunction. In diabetes and CAD, the problem is reduced blood flow, which can improve with exercise. ED can also be compounded by testosterone-lowering drugs used to treat prostate disease.

Alcohol/drugs: Consuming too much alcohol can also make ED worse. If you drink more than 2 drinks a day, 7 days a week or binge/party on the weekends, it’s too much. Similarly, many prescription medications, especially blood pressure medications, can make ED worse. Ask your doctor if the medication you are taking is absolutely necessary and/or if it would be possible to reduce the dosage. Other substances, such as marijuana, can also contribute to ED. Now I would like to talk to ladies over 50.

Is Menopause Delaying Your Sex Life?

As I tell my patients with menopausal wives or girlfriends, menopause can add a whole new dimension to sexual concerns in relationships over 50. Menopause can bring a wave of uncertainty about their femininity. They may see drier hair and skin, flabby muscles, weight gain, and may not feel as attractive as before.

Additionally, as a woman ages, the vaginal tissues undergo physical changes due to the decline in estrogen. The walls become thinner and the tissues become less resistant. They may also experience vaginal dryness, which can cause burning inflammation that causes severe discomfort during sex.

Menopausal women may have trouble sleeping due to hormonal changes and simply may not have the same physical energy for sexual intercourse as before. However, there are some natural things that women can do to help them regain their youthful attractiveness and sex drive.

Nutritional support: A decrease in estrogen can affect how a woman looks and feels. Women don’t feel sexy if they don’t feel good or feel good about themselves! Menopause requires much more vitamin and mineral support to work to lower estrogen levels. Some menopause superstars are:

Fish Oil and Super Primrose Oil – both in a dose of 1,000 mg per day – helps in the fight against general dryness.

Strong vitamin/mineral composition – it should contain all the B vitamins, vitamin D, vitamin C and important antioxidants such as selenium. It should also contain the trace mineral boron, which is usually deficient in menopausal women.

Calcium, zinc and magnesium – 1200 mg of the combination daily. It helps keep your bones strong, reduces muscle tension and hot flashes.

Resveratrol (antioxidant, anti-aging agent) – can help slow aging at the cellular level and boost heart function with the side effect of smoothing the skin.

Protein and biotin – keep muscles strong and hair, nails and skin alive by consuming enough protein. Just like men, women also lose muscle from lack of protein and lack of strength training. The skin over the muscle loosens, sags and wrinkles. Same for men, 0.5 grams of protein per lb of body weight. If you weigh 180, your daily goal is 90 grams of protein.

Water – dehydration is common in men and women over 50. Your skin becomes drier and less elastic, there are more wrinkles; contributes to vaginal dryness and reduces the production of seminal fluid in men. It can also cause serious mineral imbalances that can disrupt the heart’s rhythm.

Vaginal dryness: There are several commercial products that address this issue. Natural products include Vitamin E 1000 mg soft gel and extra virgin olive oil that can be inserted vaginally. Both reduce inflammation and normalize pH in the vaginal tract. The Royal Maca supplement also works its magic on women! Not only does it help relieve vaginal dryness, but it can also increase your sex drive. Women in the South Seas have used it for years as a regenerative remedy during menopause.

Hormone replacement therapy: Some women benefit greatly from estrogen and progesterone replacement during menopause. They can relieve vaginal dryness, night sweats, hot flashes and a number of other ailments that women don’t have to suffer from. If menopause is too rough, talk to your doctor about bioidentical hormone replacement, which I highly recommend. It contains phytoestrogens and natural progesterone that are identical to natural human hormones and do not have the side effects or cancer risks of synthetic hormones such as Premarin etc.

And now a little advice for both of you….

Share your toys, play for a while

You may have seen lover shops popping up all over the place. Take your significant other and visit one! You’ll find “sex-enhancing” products here, from special underwear for her (forget the flannel!), sexy underwear for him (ditch the boxers!) and a whole range of sex toys designed to fire up your imagination and the rest of you!

Sex Enhancement Toys: It turns out to be a big help for older lovers, because batteries or electricity can stimulate faster and stronger than you can on your own. Vacuum pumps can safely help achieve a satisfactory erection even with ED. Enhancement toys and devices can be a source of fun, which is always a welcome aphrodisiac.

There are also enhanced stimulation lotions for both men and women that are applied to the labial and penile skin during initial sexual play. Designed for those who may have trouble “getting there”, it contains a stimulant that can help you and your partner achieve a more intense orgasm.

Sex Enhancement Supplements: There is an herbal product available in health food stores that has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries called Horny Goat Weed (really, that’s a name!), it does exactly what the name says. It contains a substance called icariin, which has a positive effect on blood circulation in the genitals. It may take a little longer (sometimes a few days) to work than Rx enhancement drugs like Viagra, but it doesn’t have the same side effects. However, they should not be taken if you are taking prescriptions for heart rhythm or blood pressure. Others, ashwagandha and avena sativa, have long been used in Indian medicine for sexual dysfunction.

Here are some basic recommendations that I give to my patients over 50 who complain that their sex life is not what it used to be. Basically, healthy sex as you age boils down to being healthy in general. As you age, you need to pay more attention to nutrition, sleep, stress, and reducing hormone levels. Your doctor can assess your hormone levels and possibly address a natural replacement if needed. Try some of the suggestions here and see if your love life takes off. Also remember that physical sex is only one part of a happy and romantic relationship with your partner. Just like Jack Nicholson’s character, Harry, learns in the film that it’s not enough to just perform physically, you also have to let your heart feel the love!
