Moving Beyond the Rat Race
As a business coach, I interact with business owners every day. I found that most of them were at one time motivated by a desire to move beyond the rat race. The rat race is an unhealthy competition that is created by the mistaken concept that there is a finite supply of resources in the universe and that one must succeed; you have to do it at your competitor’s expense. I remember a story of 2 competing shop owners who competed daily for sales and customers.
One night one of the store owners named Joe met Magical Jeanie. Jeanie informed him that she would teach him a lesson by granting any of his requests on the condition that his competitor would receive double what he asked for. If he asked for wealth, his competitor would get double the wealth. After much thought, Joe asked to be blind in ONE eye! This story is a humorous illustration of the unhealthy competition that takes place in the rat race. One thing I learned about the rat race: Even if I win, at the end of the day I’m still BEAUTIFUL! So the question I ask is how do you move beyond the rat race? I will give you three points to consider that will allow you to move and grow to the next level.
The first point to consider is destiny. When you focus on destiny, your focus shifts from your competition to your calling. One of my favorite TV shows growing up was Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Alfred Hitchcock had a unique way of opening each episode. He showed a picture of his silhouette and then walked into it. His silhouette was sculpted specifically for him and him alone. Our destiny is like that silhouette. It is made especially for us and all we have to do is walk into it. It removes the need for unhealthy competition in that there is no need to compete for something that is already made for us. Our destiny is our life plan. When deciding on a business plan, our life plan must come first.
The second point to consider if you plan to move beyond the rat race is discipline. Stepping into your destiny takes discipline. I watched an interview with the actor Will Smith where he shared the principles of success and used the analogy of a perfect brick wall. He mentioned that if you want to build a perfect brick wall, you have to focus directly on the individual bricks and laying them as perfectly and completely as possible. Focusing on individual bricks would lead to a perfect wall. This is the discipline necessary to move into your destiny. Focus on doing the right things and work one brick at a time, away from focusing on the competition.
The third and final point to consider is desire. Desire is what motivates your discipline and allows you to go into your destiny. I am going to share with you a story of a successful guru that I saw on the Internet that will emphasize this point. A young man who wanted to be successful and achieve his destiny came across a successful guru. He asked the Guru what he would have to do to be successful. The Guru instructed the young man to meet him at the beach the next day. The next day, to the young man’s surprise, the Guru was standing in the water, calling him to meet him. The young man went knee deep into the water only to be instructed by the Guru to come closer.
He got waist deep and was again told to keep going. Finally, when the youth reached up to his neck, the Guru held his head down in the water as if trying to drown him. After a long struggle the Guru released him and they went to the shore. The Guru asked the young man what he wanted to do when his head was in the water. The young man replied that he wanted to take a breath. The Guru then imparted the following lesson to him: “In order to achieve your destiny and be successful, the same level of desire you had to inhale is the same level of desire you need to succeed.”
If you focus on destiny, discipline and desire, you will be able to move beyond the rat race.
