Insight Into 3MD Weight Loss Program

The so-called 3MD diet has been gaining popularity in recent years. This diet is also known as the 90 Day Separation Diet. It is based on two 90-day diet periods. The main benefits of this diet should be; clear and easy to follow rules and proven results (weight loss in the range of 40 – 55 pounds). Other results promised by the 3MD diet include reduced sensitivity to the weather and positive changes in metabolism.

While it is easy for many people to believe these claims, there is actually no detailed medical explanation in physical terms of how this diet is actually supposed to work. After stopping this 3MD diet, the weight gains come back. Switching from the 3MD diet to our previous nutritional patterns will cause people to gain weight again. The success of the 3MD diet is based on the following assumptions:

– We are all subject to daily nutritional cycles (doesn’t explain what they are).

– We need the right combination of foods – following the exact rules defined for each day (protein day, carbohydrate day, starch day, fruit day) and every 29th day is the so-called “water day” or fasting.

According to these two assumptions, a person should lose weight regardless of how many calories they consume per day. The menus prescribed by the inventors of the 3MD diet are quite strict “2 oranges”, “3 pieces of cake”, a smaller chicken, “dinner is ½ lunch”,…but not to mention what kind of cake, how big the piece should be, which parts of the chicken , how a “carbohydrate rich” lunch, nothing about the caloric value of the foods one should eat.

Many other rules accompany this diet. In fact, there are some healthy tips among them: how to use olive oil, limit salt, advice to consult a doctor. Exercise, the cornerstone of every serious diet in the world, deserves only a vague mention, and is nowhere near what one should do to actually lose weight. This sad fact makes the 3MD diet even more popular with overweight people. These people end up in a dead end of repeated weight gain after completing this diet. Moreover, this diet offers no explanation of the principles of its effectiveness.

Why is separating foods by specific days and separating nutrients so important?

How exactly does this cause us to lose fat?

The daily separation cycle according to 3MD consists of a strict diet from 8 pm to noon the next day. During this period it is allowed to eat only fruits and drink water. That doesn’t make any sense. Those 16 hours represent 2/3 of the entire day. And one should not starve for 16 hours every day. Any body that undergoes such a daily period of fasting becomes more sensitive to the accumulation of energy from each bite we take. The messages our body sends to our brain are intended to reduce energy consumption and take advantage of the lack of energy by depleting the energy stored in the muscles. We force our body to start dissolving our muscle mass. That is not a good message.

Muscles, when in motion, are the main energy (fat) burners. So we’re actually weakening the only “tool” that can help us get rid of fat.

3MD gives no explanation as to why we should eat carbs one day and protein the next. The problem is that the “fruit” and “starch” days are also “carb” days. The sugar in fruit and the complex sugar in starch are just two different types of the same thing – carbohydrates. Even if we somehow understand the fruit day (healthy sugar), it’s hard to make sense of the separation between the “starch” day and the “carbohydrate” day (complex, refined sugars). And there’s a rule about when you can have whole wheat bread with chicken, which goes against any healthy weight loss program (you shouldn’t mix protein (chicken) with carbs (bread)).

The 3MD diet works in the short term. But weight loss is a result of the water our body loses through this diet. 3MD is extremely popular because it does not prohibit eating calorie bombs such as chocolate. Another short-term positive effect of this diet is that it somehow regulates daily eating habits. People are disciplined by violence. This makes it much easier to go back to your old eating habits once the 90 days are up.
