The Causes of Buttocks (Butt) Pain

There are different causes of buttock or buttock pain, depending on what you are talking about.

Buttock/back muscle pain – Does the big muscle on your butt hurt when you sit, stand, walk or have sex or other physical exercise? Does it hurt worse when you press on the center of your butt? What about during a massage, when they rub you hard in this area – do you jump off the table in pain? Does the pain radiate down one or both legs? Is it sharp, dull, burning or painful, is it still there? Doesn’t it keep you from sleeping? Is it spasmodic? All of these could describe buttock pain caused by your sciatic nerve.

What is the sciatic nerve? – The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that comes from your spine in your lower back, runs through your butt, and down your legs. It can easily be aggravated by stress. When you’re stressed, your muscles tighten and compress that nerve, causing all sorts of symptoms and making your life miserable overall.

Low back/buttock pain – The lower back and buttocks are closely connected, so if one area hurts, the other will often hurt. The sciatic nerve passes through both the lower back and the buttocks. Some have pain only in the lower back, some only in the butt or only one butt in the face, some have pain in the lower back, radiating from one butt to the leg. All of these describe a typical sciatic nerve problem.

Pain in the anus (or ass) – These are more than likely hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are veins in or just outside your anus that become swollen, hard, and very tender. Sometimes you can even see hemorrhoids if you point your butt to the mirror, bend over and stretch your butt. They may look like small round purple balls (this is a vein) or they may be red and swollen. (Search for “hemorrhoids” and select images.) Hemorrhoids are caused by sitting (truck drivers often suffer from them) constipation (stretching while trying to poop will eventually cause hemorrhoids,) pregnancy can cause hemorrhoids due to constipation and pressure from the growing baby and dehydration. Chronic dehydration is one of the main causes of constipation and therefore hemorrhoids. You should drink at least 2 liters of water every day. Coffee, tea and soft drinks do not count. You can get Preparation H from your local pharmacy to provide temporary relief from itching, burning and swelling. But to really get rid of them for good, you need to add more water and more fiber to your diet. I like to drink 2-3 liters of water a day and eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Because of these changes, I no longer have hemorrhoids. If you think it’s hemorrhoids but it doesn’t go away after a few weeks of hydration and constipation, see your doctor. PS the toilet is NOT the library. Don’t sit there for hours and read – this is one of the main causes of hemorrhoids.

Pain or burning in the upper part of the buttock crack – If you have pain, redness, itching, burning and/or slight bleeding at the top of the buttock crack, you may have pilonidal cyst.

From Wikipedia:Pilonidal cysts are quite painful, affect men more often than women, and usually occur between the ages of 15 and 24. Although they are usually found near the coccyx, the condition can also affect the navel, armpit or penis.’

These cysts often get bacterial or fungal infections. If you want to try treating it yourself, get an over-the-counter antibacterial cream and apply it twice a day after showering. If the problem persists after a few weeks, you may want to see your doctor. I know, awkward. I once had to go to the doctor for an extremely painful hemorrhoid.
