5 Essential Components of Physical Fitness
Being physically fit is more than buying a gym membership and working out on exercise machines. There are several main components that are necessary to achieve total physical fitness. Of course, you can be trim or muscular without including all of these, but you’ll be missing important pieces of the fitness puzzle, and you’ll feel it in the long run. Here are the 5 components.
#1. Eat a healthy diet
The old saying “you are what you eat” has never been truer than in today’s society. The commercially driven fast food industry combined with convenience and busy lifestyles have made many Americans morbidly overweight. This is an epidemic of our children that must change soon or we may be the first generation in history to outlive our children.
A good balance of lean meat, fresh fruit, nuts and vegetables is an essential part of your daily diet. Also, manage your portions.
#2. In addition to diet, proper conditioning is also essential for building and strengthening muscles. Using heavy weights during training will help you develop strength, endurance and muscle mass. Strength training coupled with increased calorie and protein intake will encourage your body to build muscle tissue. As your muscle tissue grows, so will your strength. A combination of strength training and proper diet is a key component of a muscle conditioning plan. If the right combination is not followed, you will rather burn not only fat, but also muscle, rather than build it.
#3. Add cardio to your exercise routine. This is very important because cardio will build your endurance and strengthen your heart. You can do this by running, cycling, rowing, etc. for long distances, or other short, high-energy workouts like sprinting uphill, swimming, etc.
#4. Take multivitamins and other nutrients. The fresh vegetables we get in the market today are not nearly as good for us as they were as recently as the 1950s, and much less than they were at the turn of the 20th century. This is due to the severe erosion of our topsoil and the early harvest required to get our fruit and vegetables to market before they spoil. Basically, we buy produce that is not fully ripe and therefore has not reached its full nutritional value. The American Medical Association now recommends that every American take a daily multivitamin.
#5. To drink a lot of water. I’m not talking about calorie-laden energy drinks, sodas or diet sodas, etc., I’m talking about good old h20. Our bodies need a lot of water to keep us properly hydrated and to help flush unhealthy toxins from our systems. Drink 6-8 8 oz. glasses a day for your health.
While many local fitness clubs offer the best in strength training fitness equipment, you don’t necessarily have to go to the gym just to work out. You can also exercise at home. There are many different manufacturers of exercise equipment that offer effective exercise machines at very reasonable prices. As long as you stay focused, have the most basic equipment, and are constantly aware of your health and fitness, your fitness program should work well if you stick to it.
