Coca-Cola Syrup – A Beverage for the Kidneys

Researching and writing about coca-cola syrup,

mentioned in more than fifty Edgar Cayce readings, presents a problem

carbonated drinks in general. What did Cayce say?

them?

A number of ARE members familiar with

readers may know that such soft drinks have been listed

like “slop.” Two readings use it more descriptively

period. “No booze or soft drinks of any kind,

should be taken…” (5545-2) When listing the diet for

midday meal, further reading added: “…and no

drink much filth in the form of drinks!” (542-1) Still

despite this somewhat humiliating subtext, at least seven

individuals were specifically advised to drink carbonated beverages

beverages, including Coca-Cola. However, many others –

most were told to avoid or use them altogether

only in syrup form without carbonation. in

one reading of a mixture of one half carbonated water with

one half of pure water added to the syrup was suggested.

The term plain water was usually used to refer to what

cola syrup was supposed to be mixed with consumption,

probably means pure water.

Carbonated: Yes or No?

A number of statements in the readings express

emphatically that a certain substance is not to be

consumed – without giving an explanation or reason. Fortunately

we have access to others’ readings to compare, contrast,

and “supplement” these statements. in some cases

then-use the topic “coca-cola” as an example-an

individuals can be said that carbonated drinks were

either ok or don’t drink at all, still coca-cola

it was fine if taken in moderation. Here are some examples

from these readings:

“Carbonated drinks can be drunk,

especially Coca-Cola or similar

derivatives. They will especially help in

cleaning activity and coordination

the same through the kidneys and

elimination system.” (849-26)

“Just leave out…the carbonated one.

water, save Coca-Cola…” (1724-2)

“Stay away from anything carbonated

water, sometimes save – or rather

regularly – let’s have some coke –

Coke. That with some activities

it also acts on the kidneys to help

relieving the tension there.” (584-8)

“When carbonated waters or drinks

They take either Dr. Pepper’s or Coca-

Coke may be accepted; but let them be so

to be more like any other drink and not too much

regularly and watch out for soft drinks.”

(487-22)

“Soft drinks such as Coca-Cola,

Cherry-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, or any of them

Cola drinks may be accepted

moderating…” (1945-1)

Note that in the last two extracts one

the individual was advised to “watch out” for him.

soft drinks (with the exception of Dr.

Pepper or Coca-Cola), while the other

they were said to be fit for consumption

“in moderation.”

The first for a fifty-one-year-old woman

reading this recommendation was given:

“Any of the drinks were carbonated

waters are used very well, esp

Coca-Cola or something of that nature – simple

so no preservative is used

in its preparation.” (1703-1)

In subsequent reading, two months

she later asked why Coca-Cola and

carbonated drinks were good for her

and received this answer: “To prevent

formation of gases in the system.”

(1703-2) This reason is somewhat surprising

because many people experience it

opposite effect: carbonated drinks

tend to run gas in their systems.

Carbonated drinks are “charged”

with carbon dioxide, colorless,

a nonflammable, odorless gas that is also a

product of respiration; gas creates

effervescence and bubbles in these soft

drinks.

That being said, the majority

people were told to avoid it

drinks total; however one

an exception was made: for coca-cola

syrup itself without carbonation

could be received mixed with ordinary

water. According to certain readings

such a combination is more advantageous,

overall it helps blood circulation and helps

detoxify the body. One reading,

5097-1, gave the mixture as “1/2 oz.

or 1 oz. syrup [added to] simple

water.” The amount of water to be

used is not listed. Route on

bottle currently purchased

day, we recommend a dilution of 1 oz

of syrup to 5 ounces of pure water,

or the syrup can be poured over

crushed ice.

Indications for use

Several readings refer to Coca-Cola

as a stimulant that could

to be received if one wishes, even though v

moderation. “Taken when I’m tired

very good; but don’t drink

slowly.” (257-167) Diluted syrup

would “assist in stream cleaning

through the kidneys” (2367-1), is

“useful for the kidneys and for

cleansing the blood stream” (2766-1),

or it “cleanses the action in the kidneys

and bladder.” (3390-1) One reading

stated that this mixture “will react

with circulation between

kidneys and liver and cleanses itself

away a lot of the poisons that will be

be more beneficial to the activity

sensory system.” (5058-1)

Its beneficial effects on the kidneys and

bladder disorders can stem from

syrup is both an alkalizer and a

diuretic,” according to An Edgar Cayce

A guide to home medicine (p. 31).

How was this drink supposed to be used?

“Take Coca-Cola as medicine, not as a drink.” (3412-1) This proposal

probably allays some concerns

also about its components (see below).

as an understanding of its useful purpose; thus,

was to be drunk occasionally, as

stated values or “three to four times

week” (3109-1) – I didn’t eat it at all

down like a thirst quencher.

A historical note

8 May 1886 Dr. John S.

Pemberton, the apothecary, carried the jug

coca-cola syrup to Jacobs’ Pharmacy

is located in downtown Atlanta, Georgia.

The solution was mixed with carbon dioxide

water and customers paid 5 cents a

glass for it. There were up to nine drinks a day

purchased that year. The original drink

it was not bottled but sold from soda

fountain. 1.3 billion drinks today

More than 200 Coca-Colas are sold every day

countries around the world. What were they like?

ingredients in syrup Dr. Pemberton?

Today, the following ingredients are listed on the label:

high fructose corn syrup and/or sucrose,

water, caramel color, phosphoric acid,

natural flavors and caffeine. Here is

warning for those on limited sugar

diet consult with health care

professional before you take it. In fact

syrup has the same content as

a regular, non-diet cola soft drink, but minus

carbonated water.

In an old notebook belonging to Dr.

Pemberton was found the original recipe.

In addition to various flavorings-oils

orange, lemon, nutmeg, cinnamon,

coriander and neroli – also ingredients

including vanilla extract, lime juice and

“FE Coco” (misspelled) which is a liquid

coca leaf extract. Around 1901

cocaine was removed from the drink;

it is estimated that as a result of mining

method used (leaf mulching in the 20th

percent alcohol) that a 6-ounce bottle

probably contained no more than 8.5 mg

cocaine. Dr. Pemberton felt that

the stimulant properties of the drink come from

coca leaf, not just from cocaine.

Taken in limited quantities, as

readings suggest, plus consider it a

medicine rather than entertainment

the drink certainly changes the perspective

to this well-known and popular drink.
