Coaching Or Coasting?
If I were to ask you what the word COACH means to you – I’m sure you’d come up with a number of different descriptors. Maybe you think of a sports coach, maybe a modern bus, maybe even a horse-drawn vehicle.
Although the most recognized forms of coaching come from the world of sports – the idea of a coach being pulled by horses is a great analogy to explain how coaching helps clients – I will use it metaphorically here to show you:
1. What is performance coaching?
2. How coaching helps people – some real examples of results and outputs
3. Why people decided to use cooperation with a coach
The word coaching literally means to transfer someone from one place to another. One thing that all forms of coaching seem to have in common is that people use it to help them move forward or create change.
Often when I first meet my clients, they are like a trainer without wheels. That’s not necessarily a bad place, it’s just that they’re a little stuck or feel like they’ve stopped for a while. They need to do something to move forward or create change.
So one of the first ways a coach helps is to help the client put wheels on their coach. But before we do that, there are two things we need to work through.
1. Where are they now?
2. And significantly more difficult – where do they want to be?
We need to know this so that the choice of wheels is suitable for the terrain and the route that the client wants to take. Think for a moment. What you want? What do you really, really want? If you didn’t have FEAR, what would you do? What are you doing now that you wish you weren’t? What do you really want from your life, career and business? Wouldn’t life be more fulfilling and satisfying if you knew the answer to some of these questions?
The goal doesn’t always have to be overwhelming, more often than not it can be one small change that can make a huge difference.
Here are some of the destinations I’ve helped clients achieve
o To feel more motivated to make sales calls
o Develop a marketing and sales strategy
o Improve performance in interviews
o To be clear about further career progression
o Make better presentations
o Double the business profit
o Set clear business goals
o Feeling more confident in business negotiations
o To network more efficiently
Are any of these destinations somewhere you’d like to move to?
Once we decide on a destination, we can put wheels on the bus. But even that is not enough – we may be in a position to move – but we are still missing something. Horses!
Horses provide the energy and power to move the trainer. Have you ever tried to get a horse to do something it doesn’t want to do? If not, please take my word and experience! You’re trying to take the horse down a path he doesn’t want to take – he’ll either take you off his back or turn and run the other way! This is often the reason why we have great difficulty getting motivated to do something. This is because our unconscious acts like a reluctant horse. Why? Because we often set goals we think we SHOULD be aiming for – rather than what we really want.
As the horses in this analogy represent motivation and determination, it is important that I help my clients stir up their horses to check that they are truly motivated and committed to action.
I have many examples of this. I coached Claire, an assistant brand manager in a large corporate organization. She had great difficulty dealing with others in meetings, was afraid to offer ideas, felt uncomfortable giving presentations After only 2 hours with Claire it was clear to me and more importantly to her that she hated what she was doing. She fought hard to get this job, it took her two years of internal networking to secure the position, she didn’t consider that the position was not at all what she expected. 6 months later she changed jobs and is now a sales director in another organization and is very happy.
I often use a coaching process called GROW to prepare the coachee. Very briefly, it involves the following stages:
o Objectives – establish what they really want to achieve
o Reality – we are looking at current reality – establish a starting point
o Options – we work with all possible options – sometimes there are options that people haven’t considered at all (like Claire above who didn’t consider looking for a new job a real option).
o Will – This stage is about turning the discussion into a decision. It is the drawing up of an action plan to meet a requirement that has been clearly specified, on a site that has been thoroughly researched, and using the widest possible selection of building materials. The person being coached always retains choice and ownership – even if it is their decision to take no action.
Try this sequence yourself when you are trying to solve a problem yourself or when you are helping someone else.
OK – so at this point the trainer, his wheels and horses are ready and motivated. In 1750 it took 12 days to travel from London to Edinburgh. It was not possible to complete the entire journey in one go – it had to be completed in stages. Like a stage coach pulling into an inn, as you head towards your destination, you need to understand the stages involved in your journey. This is often why people give up on goals. He sets a goal and a path that is too long and begins to seem impossible.
If you are developing a new business strategy, it will include a phased plan. Sometimes you will need to stop the horse and rest to make sure you have the energy, strength and motivation to see it through. We’re often not that good at it – as a coach I help people identify where these stages are and encourage them to assess progress, which in itself keeps them motivated.
Sometimes I actually start working with people who have made it to the first inn – but left without a map, so they have no idea where they are going now. I started working with a small business employing 20 people after they left for a year. They were doing well, but they didn’t feel in control. MD felt he was going to collapse because he had no plans or vision for the future. After a direction-focused coaching program – sales doubled, they have a clear marketing and branding strategy, a business plan and a much happier MD!
As you move along the road, your bus may become more difficult as some unwelcome passengers hitch the lift – Freddy Fear, Donald Distraction, Wilma Worry, Deirdre Doubt, Bert T Busy among others. As your coachman, I can help keep your bus lighter by moving these passengers out as we continue down the road. Like many coaches, I use NLP and life coaching approaches to keep the mind strong and focused.
Also, remember that you can have an accident on the road if you hit a bump or puddle in the road or become a victim of highway robbery (usually a taxman these days!). Again, having a coach by your side to encourage and support you – then you’re more likely to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and stay focused to get to the next stage.
So who usually buys a ticket to ride a performance bus?
There is no typical client, we are as individual as our fingerprints. I believe that the main thing that unites my clients is the willingness to move forward and bring about change. To give you some ideas of the type of clients for whom performance or business coaching would be useful:
– Establishment of new businesses – trading for less than three years
– Existing businesses that want to significantly change their performance
– Newly promoted people who want to do great things
– Ambitious people who really want to succeed
– People who are struggling or unsure of where their business or career is headed
– Companies organizing seminars or motivational training for their employees
In short, using a performance coach means people achieve the goal they want – not the one they think they should. Working with a performance coach will get you to your goal faster because it can help you lighten the load, get rid of unwanted barriers and self-limitations. It is claimed that working with a performance coach will make you 100 times more likely to achieve your goals because together we will create a motivational plan with clearly defined phases or goals.
