Feeding the Friesian Weanling in Winter

It is especially important to feed your young horse correctly (older horses need to be fed correctly too, but they are much more forgiving if you don’t feed them correctly!) as they grow and mature – putting on new muscles and bones that will shape the way they look for the rest of their lives . The growth and maturation process is long, with larger horses such as Frisians not reaching full maturity until they are 6 or 7 years old! It’s hard to know what to feed our young Friesians in the winter because they don’t need very hard food, but they still need the right nutrients to allow them to grow.

As winter approaches, the pasture begins to lose some of the nutrients it had when it first turned green last spring – it may or may not still look green, but the nutritional value has decreased and the grass is mostly composed of fiber. and now the humidity. At this time, it is important to ensure that your weanling or young horse is getting enough vitamins and minerals to supplement the diet appropriately. You can use products like salt blocks, but these don’t necessarily give them everything they need and there’s no way to tell how much they’ve consumed, so a powdered or pelleted hard food supplement (or just mixed with some chaff if they’re not hard fed) is better choice. Providing the correct levels of vitamins and minerals to your pup will ensure that they are not in excess or deficient of a particular vitamin or mineral that can be vital for proper growth and maturity.

You probably don’t mess around with a horse that young in the winter – our little rascals tend to grab, tear, bite and generally wreak havoc, so it doesn’t make much sense at this stage. Your weaners therefore really need adequate shelter in their pens and plenty of hay and roughage to keep them warm.

Feeding horses roughage and fiber in the form of hay (even low-quality grass hay for horses that get too fat!) ensures that the big fermentation tank that is their hindgut is always full – when they have a full hindgut and ferment heat , thereby keeping your horse warm while keeping them hydrated as it traps and retains water.

It’s important to monitor your horses’ body condition – in the winter, their long hair makes it harder to see if your horse is getting too fat or perhaps too thin. You can smell fat in certain parts of the horse’s body, such as the rib cage. If you do this regularly – say at least once a week – you should be able to notice a difference in your horses body weight. Frisian people tend to gain weight really easily, so it’s important to make sure you maintain your weight – it’s much harder to lose that weight!

If your horse is getting too fat, reducing the amount of hard forage he is getting will solve this problem, or feed a lower quality hay to reduce weight (remember it is very important that your horse is getting at least 1% and ideally 2% of his live weight in of roughage – pasture or hay per day, so reducing the amount of hay you give them can be disastrous as it is essential to your horses digestive health!). If your horse is losing too much weight, increase the hard feed, perhaps by adding fats in the form of oils, soya meal, rice bran, etc., as these are not “fizzy” feeds.

It is vital to remember that every horse is an individual and every horse will need to be fed differently – some will lose more weight than others over the winter, some will gain weight!! So make sure you check each horse and adjust their diet accordingly and you’ll see a beautiful yearling emerge on the other side of winter!
