Headache and Migraine Relief – Causes and Natural Solutions

I have suffered from headaches and migraines for as long as I can remember. My dad told me that when I was learning to speak as a child, one of the first things I learned to say was that I had a headache. I grew up regularly taking large amounts of acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Motrin) for pain. While I really don’t like putting drugs into my body, when it comes to intense pain, I find myself turning to whatever brings relief.

The problem with headaches and migraines is that it is difficult to identify why they occur. Sometimes it’s obvious; you have a congested head from sinus pressure or you fell and hit your head hard. But it mostly creeps up on you over the course of a few hours until you eventually reach the point where any type of movement, noise, or bright light feels like a hammer hitting your head.

Years of painkillers have damaged my liver. I don’t blame them as I have chosen to put them in my body on many occasions and I’m sure I will do so again in the agony of the moment. They mostly help ease the pain and sometimes we just need to get to the next moment to move on.

But they don’t always help. Truth be told, I haven’t found anything, drug or natural, that completely eliminates my migraines every time. However, I find that by having an arsenal of different potions, one of them has to work for whatever headache I’m having. Maybe one of them will help you.

Overlooked causes of headaches:

Low blood sugar

High/low blood pressure

Low blood circulation

Toxic bloodstream

Dilated blood vessels

Have you noticed the connection between headaches and blood? Hmmm

Hormonal headaches

Apply Dragon Time, a Young Living essential oil blend, directly to the abdomen and lower back.

or

6 drops of Dragon Time on the bottom of each foot and on the inside of the ankles

Sinus Congestion Headaches

Peppermint oil can be used in many ways.

Peppermint Oil #1

The easiest way is to put a few drops in your palm, pour them over your mouth and nose and take a few deep breaths. This helps with congestion.

Peppermint Oil #2

I usually apply peppermint oil directly to my scalp, right where the pain is. I apply it wherever it hurts the most. But I also put a little in my palm and put a little on my fingertip to apply above my eyebrows, behind my ears near my jaw and all over my neck.

Be careful not to get it in your eyes or rub your eyes with this finger later. If you get any, simply squeeze out some vegetable oil and gently apply it to the burning area. It stops burning almost immediately.

Peppermint Oil #3

I know people who got rid of a headache with a single drop of peppermint oil on the back of their neck. It didn’t work for me, but I’ve met too many people who have had it work for me to be skeptical.

Peppermint Oil #4

Mix a drop of peppermint oil into your shampoo and then back into your conditioner. The foam helps to easily disperse the oil all over the head. The tingling is so good I don’t want to wash it off. It’s nice even if you don’t have a headache, but if you do, it’s just heavenly.

Peppermint Oil #5

Inhale: wipe the tip of the nose, breathe deeply. Apply neatly to the forehead and temples, cheekbones, across the bridge of the nose and around the ears.

Roman chamomile oil

Apply to each of the points on the face and neck, basically wherever you feel pressure in the sinuses. It never helped me personally, but we are all made differently.

Low blood sugar

Check your blood sugar. If it is between 60 and 70, you may develop a mild headache. If it’s between 50 and 60, you’re more likely to have a full-on headache, feel weak, tired, and irritable. My best friend gets headaches whenever her blood sugar drops. As far as I’m concerned, he’s lucky because once he eats, the headache goes away.

Migraines and the liver

Using the theory that migraines are related to the liver, focus on the liver and head to toe area. Apply a few drops of Valor essential oil all over your feet, paying special attention to the backs of your big toes and rub them in thoroughly. Rub a drop or two of M-Grain on the back of your toes and also on the nail bed. The brain point is on the big toe.

The liver point is on the right leg. If you find the center of your foot (without the toes) and move towards the part you step on, rub there. Here too I rub a drop of M-Grain, rub it rhythmically for several minutes. It is easier to spread with a few drops of olive oil.

Then massage the M-Grain on the Liver 3 point, which is on the top of the foot along the path between the big toe and the next to the ankle. Run your finger between those bones and rub the oil in.

Chemical headache

Toxins from chemicals such as paint fumes can cause headaches. Inhaling an essential oil such as peppermint oil can help restore balance. This is where oil diffusion is particularly effective.

Dilated blood vessels

Caffeine constricts blood vessels. Sometimes just drinking coffee or cola can help a migraine.

Other things to try:

Fresh wheatgrass juice

Fresh celery juice

Thieves essential oil blend

Apply one drop to the thumb and press to the roof of the mouth

Lavender oil and peppermint oil

Apply a drop of lavender oil to your temples and neck. Layer the peppermint oil on top of the lavender. Sometimes the combination is stronger than the individual.

Grapefruit oil

It doesn’t tell me anything in itself. However, when I layer it on top of other oils, it enhances the effect of the other oils.

Here’s another recipe for pain [http://www.healthyaromas.com/pain_control.php], in general. But this might knock you out, so don’t take it unless you’re at home and can’t rest. Valerian is classified as a mild tranquilizer and has a sedative effect on the body. It’s called “Nature’s Valium” for a reason.

20 drops of valerian oil

10 drops of Helichrysum oil

3 drops of clove oil

3 drops of peppermint oil

Fill an empty capsule or two, depending on the size of the capsule, with these oils and swallow a glass of water.
