A routine schedule can be followed on a daily, weekly, monthly, bi-annual and annual basis to properly care for your reptiles. The following is a bearded dragon care sheet with a list of essential features to keep your dragons happy and healthy.
Daily:
• Feed the lizard and replace the water bowl with a fresh one
• Remove feeding bowls and clean them after feeding
• Clean the feeding area of all unconsumed food
• Clean the substrate of any toilets or faeces
• Check your dragon for any visual signs of disease or shedding problems
• Spend some time with your pet outside the enclosure
Weekly:
• Redeem your bearded dragon
• Trim the reptile’s toenails
• Clean the enclosure thoroughly, clear of all objects such as branches and stones
• Clean the area around the cage, including the bottom and back of the tank
• Check that all heating and lighting equipment are in working order
• Take your kite outside and bask in the sun
Monthly:
• Remove all cage components and wash the tank with bleach. Allow to dry completely in the sun.
Twice a year:
• Remove and replace an inch of the top layer of substrate for all cages you keep outdoors.
Annually:
• Visit your veterinarian. Take your pet with stool samples to check for any parasites or diseases.
Additionally, you need to be aware of the nutritional needs of your young and adult dragons. Below is a list of the basic food ratios and variety needed to build a healthy diet for your bearded dragon and ensure a healthy and long life for your reptile.
For teenagers and adults:
• 50 percent: – insects pre-fed and loaded guts consisting of crickets, mealworms, waxworms and give them the little finger once or twice.
• 30 percent: – green vegetables rich in calcium, such as alfalfa, hazelnuts, mustard greens, dandelion greens, spinach, cabbage, broccoli and green beans.
• 10 percent: – other vegetables, for example zucchini, peppers, grated carrots, tomatoes and sprouts.
• 10 percent: – other foods, such as bread, cereal and commercial bearded dragon food.
Adults can be fed once a day and juveniles twice a day. The young dragon’s vegetables should be cut into smaller pieces and given smaller insects to make them easier to eat. Hatchlings, because they grow quickly, should receive more protein and feed them twice a day. Their food ratio should be 60 percent protein, 25 percent calcium-rich vegetables, and 15 percent other foods.
By creating a care list for your dragon, you will reduce the risk of forgetting to do any of the chores and neglecting your pet.
Your dragons should be taken out of their cage every now and then, so there are some dos and don’ts to properly handle your pet:
1. Do not grab him by his tail or limbs.
2. Don’t grab him suddenly without warning.
3. Take a slow and gentle approach.
4. Place a finger under the chin and extend it under the body.
5. Move the hatchlings using the perch on which they are lying.
6. Support the kite in the palm of your hand so that its head is facing away from you.
7. Do not push or squeeze any part of his body.
8. Don’t punch him if he suddenly runs away. Better to block his path with one hand and gently lift it up with your fingers.
