Dental Care – 8 Ways To Ease Denture Discomforts

A set of perfectly healthy pearly whites can be of great benefit to anyone and give a person a reason to smile. But there are times when one cannot settle for the next best thing – dentures.

While dentures can replace teeth lost due to periodontal disease, decay or injury, they cannot be as good as your natural teeth. While dentures can be valuable in keeping your facial muscles from sagging and for other health reasons, they can also cause a significant amount of pain and discomfort. The times when dentures can cause quite a bit of discomfort include the adjustment phase (when the dentures are new) and after several years of use (when they start to fit poorly).

During the adjustment phase, you may find that your dentures tend to slip when you talk and eat. Sometimes you may even develop painful mouth ulcers as a result of this adjustment period! Fortunately, you will find that after some time you will get more used to your dentures and for several years everything will be perfectly fine.

However, the absence of natural teeth eventually causes the bony ridge of the gums to shrink due to lack of stimulation. Since plastic prostheses remain the same, you may again find yourself in a painfully uncomfortable situation.

But why suffer the discomfort of dentures when you can avoid them? Here are some effective solutions that can help you avoid the problem.

1. Try to keep your dentures clean. Keeping your dentures clean, especially during the fitting period, is a must. During this time it is very important to keep the presence of bacteria to an absolute minimum as they can slow down the healing process. As you get more used to your new ‘chompers’, you can clean them at least twice a day. For this purpose, the use of toothpaste or a special denture cleaner and clean water may be sufficient. By the way, if you want your dentures sparkling clean, you can also brush them with soap and water!

2. Don’t forget to brush your gums too! Cleaning the gums not only helps in the fight against plaque and bacteria. It also provides the necessary stimulation to maintain healthy tissues under the gums.

3. Soft foods are the way to go. During the adaptation period, it is advisable to “babybove” the mouth. The gums are still going through the healing process and need time to adjust to the pressure of the new dentures. Once your gums are properly healed, you can go back to enjoying the foods you used to eat at any time. Avoid eating hard to chew food such as apples and corn on the cob.

4. Take the sting out of the pain by taking painkillers. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen, aspirin, and ibuprofen can effectively relieve pain caused by new dentures.

5. Ease the pain by taking a break: In most cases, you can ease gum pain by removing your dentures for about an hour or two. If you notice that a red spot has formed, do not wear your dentures for a day. If that still doesn’t help, see your dentist.

6. Salt Water Magic: Whether you’re in the adjustment period or have been wearing dentures for a while, you can always use a warm salt water mouthwash. Not only does it help ward off those pesky bacteria, it also helps strengthen the tissues in your gums! For best results, remove the dentures and rinse your mouth with a salt water mixture (1/2 teaspoon of salt for every 4 ounces of warm water) every 3 to 4 hours.

7. Always have a professional hand handle the edits. Never make adjustments to your dentures yourself. You can probably do more harm than good and cost you more in the long run. Adjusting the denture with a pocket knife or filling the spaces between the denture and gum tissues with over-the-counter adhesives is a big no-no! Always seek the help of your dentist when you need to adjust the fit of your dentures.

8. Go to bed without your dentures. Like any part of your body, your gums need a break, so don’t forget to take your dentures out before you hit the sheets!
