Fish Oil for Natural Pain Relief

Healthy, natural, pain relief – kill two birds with one stone.

Painkillers may work well (for pain), but they are not good for your health. The most commonly used pain relievers are called NSAIDs for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. And drugs like these kill. Long-term use of NSAIDs is associated with kidney problems, gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, and even heart disease.

The Associated Press reported the results of a research study on over-the-counter pain relievers such as Aleve, Motrin and Advil. The study found that anyone who took either of these drugs for at least 6 months had “double the risk of dying from a heart attack, stroke, or other heart-related problem.”

Tylenol is no better.

Many people who have heard about the dangers of NSAIDs have turned to acetomenophen (Tylenol). Unfortunately, acetomenophen is “the leading cause of acute liver failure in the United States.”

A particularly diabolical combination of drugs is found in Vicodin. Vicodin contains opiates, which are addictive, combined with acetomenophen, which damages the liver. Vicodin is also the most commonly prescribed drug in the United States. When giving Vicodin to a patient, the doctor is giving an addictive drug that damages the liver.

I would never suggest that anyone suffer pain. Pain is also harmful to the body. One study followed chronic back pain sufferers for one year. MRI scans of the brain were taken at the beginning and end of the twelve-month period. These MRIs were compared with MRIs of matched subjects who did not suffer any pain. The difference was astounding. Normally, as we age, we lose gray matter in our brain. An MRI scan could measure the amount of gray matter in each test subject’s brain at the beginning and end of a one-year period. The brains of the chronic pain group were aged the equivalent of 10 years compared to the pain-free group.

So what is the solution? How about natural pain-killing omega-3 fats that relieve pain without the negative side effects, only with amazing health benefits?

Nowadays, everyone has already heard about the benefits of using fish oil, flaxseed oil (oil containing Omega-3 fats). An important component of Omega-3 fats when it comes to pain is EPA. EPA is the building block for a powerful anti-inflammatory hormone that occurs naturally in the body. Most Americans are woefully deficient in Omega-3 fats and EPA. When our body doesn’t have enough building blocks to make this critical anti-inflammatory substance, it can’t control inflammation. (Chronic pain is often associated with chronic inflammation). EPA is particularly concentrated in some fish oils.

Research studies demonstrate the effects of fish oil on pain relief.

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons published a study titled “High-Dose Omega-3 Oils Used to Treat Non-Surgical Neck and Back Pain”. This study included 250 patients who suffered from chronic neck pain and who were taking NSAIDs for relief. Researchers gave patients high doses of fish oil daily. After 75 days, nearly 2/3 of patients (59%) stopped taking pain medication, saying the oil provided satisfactory relief. 88% of the entire study group said they planned to continue using the oil after the study ended.

Fish oil relieves many types of pain.

Another study published in The Clinical Journal of Pain was titled “Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Neuropathic Pain: Case Studies.” Neuropathic pain is nerve pain. This pain comes directly from the nerve and is different from the pain of arthritis, a strained muscle, or a bruised knee. Neuropathic pain is usually more difficult to treat and is often more severe. The study followed the cases of five patients. Each patient had a different disease causing the pain. They suffered cervical radiculopathy (a pinched nerve in the neck), thoracic outlet syndrome (nerve compression in the chest/shoulder), fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome and one burn injury. Patients were given high doses of fish oil containing omega-3. Here is a sample of how each of these patients did after taking the oil.

The pain from the pinched nerve and herniated disc subsided.

Patient #1 was a 53-year-old man with a herniated disc in his neck that pinched a nerve, causing pain to radiate into his arm. Previous treatments such as physiotherapy and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs did not help. After 2 ½ weeks of taking the fish oil, his pain was relieved. After 8 months, he improved enough to start playing competitive hockey again. After 19 months, he felt he was cured and had no limitations. However, if he stopped taking the oil for more than 4 days, the pain started to return.

Fibromyalgia pain and thoracic outlet syndrome relieved.

Patient #2 was a 48-year-old nurse who was injured at work. She was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and thoracic outlet syndrome. (Thoracic outlet syndrome is compression of nerves as they travel from the neck to the arm through the upper chest and shoulder). Previous treatment with painkillers and physical therapy did not help. After 7 months of taking high doses of fish oil, she improved significantly. After 13 months, she felt she was cured of both conditions.

Man with crippling pain after car accident gets relief with fish oil.

Patient #3 was a 50-year-old man who suffered from chronic neck and arm pain as a result of a car accident. This patient remained disabled even after treatment including chiropractic, massage, physical therapy, and NSAIDs. After consuming large doses of fish oil, his pain began to improve. He was finally able to start working out at the gym again without pain. He also reported that he thought more clearly and had better concentration.

A patient with carpal tunnel syndrome avoids surgery and receives pain relief with fish oil.

Patient #4 was a 47-year-old man with carpal tunnel syndrome. After 8 months of taking high doses of fish oil, his pain symptoms improved significantly. A nerve conduction test also showed a significant improvement in nerve function. He improved enough to avoid surgery.

A patient with 2nd and 3rd degree burns gets off morphine and relieves the pain with fish oil.

Patient #5 was a 54-year-old man who suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 30% of his body. He was hospitalized for over a month and had extensive skin grafts. His pain level continued to be so high that he was on morphine. Taking high doses of fish oil eased the pain enough to get him off the morphine.

Fish oil supplementation provides tremendous health benefits. Some of the documented health benefits include relief from inflammatory joint pain and chronic back pain, improvement in autoimmune disease, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, improved and reduced risk of depression, and pain relief in fibromyalgia syndrome.

What to watch out for when taking high doses of fish oil.

  • Fish oil is a blood thinner. If you are taking a prescription blood thinner, you should start with a low dose while monitoring the clotting time. If you are going to have a dental procedure, surgery, or any other invasive procedure (such as a colonoscopy), you should stop taking fish oil two weeks in advance because of its blood-thinning effect.
  • Before taking high doses of fish oil, you should have a blood test done to measure the ratio of Omega-6 (AA or arachidonic acid) to Omega-3 (EPA or Eicosapentaenoic acid). The ideal AA/EPA ratio for heart health is 1.5/1 to 3/1.
  • Take only “pure” fish oil. Better products are cleansed of contaminants and toxins commonly found in today’s ocean fish (mercury, PCP, dioxins). The gold standard purification process is called molecular distillation.
