Older Children, Bed-Wetting, and Self-Diapering

I briefly addressed this issue in an earlier sharepost on the Health Central Network. This issue concerns me, which is why I felt it needed to be addressed in more depth. On this website and others, I have read about how parents and babysitters change diapers for older children with wetting problems. Some of these children are 9 or older. As we all know, bedwetting can be very stressful, and in my opinion, this stress can be exacerbated by parents not letting their child wear their own protection. I am by no means a childcare expert, but my intuition tells me that by the age of 3 or 4, a child should learn how to put diapers on themselves.

As mentioned in a previous post, I had a friend who had to babysit a 6 year old. She was telling me that she had to change the baby before going to bed. Given his age, I assumed he was potty trained and that the reason he was wearing diapers was a wetting problem. She told me he ran around the house naked and screaming and refused to let her diaper him, which I can’t say because I blame him.

I believe that an older child, teen or teenager should wear diapers to bed if all attempts to cure him have failed and if other clothing such as tights and “Goodnites” do not offer sufficient protection, but I also feel that young people would they should be responsible for deploying their own protection unless they have some cognitive and/or physical disability that either makes it difficult or prevents them from doing so. Changing an older child’s nappy has the potential to drastically affect a child’s mental health for many years.

There are certain tasks that young people who are not cognitively or physically disabled can do, including tying shoes, getting dressed, etc. Changing one’s own diapers would also fit into this category in my opinion.

If parents are concerned that the child may not be able to fasten the diaper properly and thus cause the diaper to leak, parents can show the child how to fasten the diaper properly. One way to do this is to put the diaper on the bed, have the baby sit in the diaper and tell him how to fold and fasten the diaper properly. I would do this when the child is young, because the older the child gets, the more awkward they will feel. This is a very sensitive area for children. Many bed-wetting children feel self-conscious and embarrassed about wearing diapers to bed (although, as I’ve pointed out many times, they shouldn’t be) and will feel even more self-conscious and embarrassed when their parents change them. Bedwetting also causes a feeling of helplessness in many children, and parents changing the child’s diapers reinforces the feeling of helplessness. This is why children should learn independence in this area as early as possible.

As for pin diapers, some parents worry that the baby might stick to the pins. This is certainly a legitimate concern, but as long as proper precautions are taken, it shouldn’t be a problem. I spoke to someone in customer service for a company that sells cloth diapers and plastic pants for older children and adults who have wetting issues to get her to understand, and she told me that at age 7 or younger, parents may need to turn the diapers on, above 7 years it would depend on the development of the child. I believe the same steps taken with disposable diapers can also be taken with cloth diapers. Again, parents should put the diapers on the bed, let the child sit in them, and teach them the proper way to fasten the diapers. I can’t stress this enough – children need to be taught at a young age how to become independent in this area.

Another idea I have for teaching youth how to be self-sufficient in this area is as follows. I don’t know how feasible this idea is and I admit it’s a bit unusual, but as they say in many situations it’s good to think outside the box. Many community colleges use mannequins to demonstrate certain medical techniques to nursing students. Parents could talk to the head of nursing at their local community school and see if they could borrow a mannequin and then use the mannequin to teach the child the proper way to fasten a diaper. If the head of the nursing department asks you why you want to borrow the mannequin, you can explain that you have a child who wears diapers for a bedwetting problem and you want to use the mannequin to teach him how to fasten the diapers properly. If you can’t borrow a dummy, you can ask them if they have any suggestions on what to do in this situation. I suspect that buying something like this at a health supply store would be expensive, so the community college nurse might have ideas for alternative approaches to the situation. Alternatively, you can call your local medical/hospital supply store and see if they have any ideas. on how to deal with this matter. As I have already mentioned, this is a very delicate situation that has the potential to cause irreparable psychological damage to the child.

I wonder if some parents diaper their older child because they may miss the closeness of the parent/child relationship on some level, and this is a way to recreate that. Some parents consciously or subconsciously want to keep their child at a certain level of development because the parents don’t want to let go emotionally. It should be emphasized that this is only speculation and I’m not saying that this is necessarily the case for all parents who cloth diaper their older child, but it should be considered that it could be a factor for some people and if it is The case should be handled with a mental health professional to avoid causing emotional harm to the child.

I hope people understand that this article is not meant to be a criticism of anyone’s parenting skills. It is to help people realize that children are very sensitive to these kinds of problems. Children need their privacy and independence in these areas, and disrespecting them makes them feel unworthy. I hope this helps people see this issue in a new light. As always, I find dialogue on these matters very important and welcome any constructive thoughts on the subject…
