Puppy Obedience Training – Top Tips

Puppy obedience training – how to succeed. When Should You Start Puppy Obedience Training? Puppies aged – 5 – 7 weeks

Your puppy’s age plays an important role in deciding when you should start a training program…

  • 5-7 weeks – This is the age when puppies start to behave like dogs.
  • The mother will start weaning the young puppies from around the fourth week (although this can vary slightly.)
  • From the fourth week (approx.) the dog’s mother begins to teach the puppy discipline such as bite inhibition – this is a process that teaches a puppy how much pressure should be applied to bite (so that puppies don’t bite their littermates too much.)
  • Age from 5-7 weeks it is also very important in the development of the puppies, as it is the time when the mother dog begins to teach the puppy social skills – this will allow the puppy to learn how communicate with other puppies, dogs and people.
  • Important – If a puppy is taken too early in these stages of development, it could have disastrous effects on the puppy and its behavior and obedience later in life.

The importance of house training at an early age…

  • If puppies are properly trained at this very important 5 – 7 week + stage, they will learn the basic concepts of house training.
  • Puppies (with a choice) will not naturally be eliminated in their crate/litterbox (if their mother has taught them to do so and not separated too soon), even if it means a quick stumble and wobble to the other side of the crate/litterbox.
  • If for whatever reason (perhaps you left him in a crate/litterbox) your puppy eliminates in his litter box – he may then think it’s ok and continue to do so.

Puppies aged 8 – 16 weeks.

  • This is a critical stage in your puppy’s life and development – if you mess it up here and you are setting yourself up for major puppy obedience and puppy behavior problems in the future.
  • At this age, your puppy begins to realize whether it is a great world to live in or a scary and scary world.
  • IMPORTANT – If your puppy does not meet and interact with other people, children and dogs at this age, he may become frightened, and as we know, a nervous and frightened dog can lead to an aggressive dog.
  • At this point, if you are not consistent with the house training process, your puppy will be inconsistent with house training later in life.

Don’t be fooled!

  • You may think your puppy is fully trained at this stage – he may even go to the door when he wants to eliminate – however…
  • This is where basic and very common mistakes are made in the training process – YOU have unrealistic expectations…
  • Just because your puppy THINKS he’s a big boy – he’s learned the concept of the process of asking to go outside – but biologically he’s still a baby and can pee when he goes outside because he’s still fighting it as a baby. bladder control.
  • At around 8 weeks, your puppy can hold their bladder for around 2 hours and this will increase to around 4 hours by the time they reach 16 weeks.
  • Don’t expect your pup to stick to it – if you do, you’re asking your pup to get a UTI.

Puppies aged 4 – 6 months.

This is where all your workouts are proven to work or fail!

  • If you thought everything was going well and your beautiful puppy was raised – don’t hold your breath because you could be proven wrong.
  • At this age, your puppy is very easily distracted – just when you think he is about to pee, he will go and chase a fly – this is normal.
  • At this age, puppies can hold their bladder for about 4-5 hours – without a potty break.
  • At around 6 months of age, your puppy should last around 6-7 hours.

Puppies aged 6 – 12 months.

This is when your little puppy begins to develop sexually – this brings its own set of problems.

  • If you own an unneutered male – as he is developing sexually, he may start lifting his leg and peeing on the furniture.
  • If you own a female, she can have her first heat anywhere between 6 – 12 months.
  • If you have been consistent in your house training, then your puppy should be able to hold his bladder for between 7-8 hours between potty breaks.
  • Don’t make a common mistake think your puppy is fully potty trained at this age – many people let them run around the house when they are out – only to find accidents around the house – This is because puppies don’t have to associate their bed/crate with the whole House, until they are 1 year or older.
