Baby Can’t Poop? Try Chayote Puree

My child’s favorite puree is chayote.

Do you have visions of Road Runner and Wiley E. Coyote and wonder how I got my hands on coyote meat? Let me say up front that no, I did not type “coyote”!

Chayote is a green vegetable that looks a bit like a pear. The bottom part reminds me of the way a mouth without teeth is drawn. I’ve only seen chayote in the supermarket and imagined it growing on trees. I’ve even found myself humming “…and a partridge and a pear tree…” while picking in the produce aisle.

I was completely wrong about the tree. The Chayote is part of the gourd family, like squash, zucchini, and pumpkins…which brings on visions of Charlie Brown calling out for the Great Chayote. Except the chayote is much smaller than a pumpkin and wouldn’t work for Halloween carving.

It can be eaten raw, but I always cooked it. The root, stem, seeds and leaves are edible. I have eaten a soft, flat, cooked seed that tastes pretty good. One important tip to maximize your enjoyment of chayote is to cut off the wavy part at the bottom, as it has a stringy, stringy quality that penetrates the vegetable. I think this is where the seed gets ready to germinate.

To prepare as a baby puree, cook the chayote. After cooking, peel off the skin. Then run the knife along the wavy bottom and cut all the way up. You go right through the soft seed. Cut off the stringy part. Cut it into large pieces. Mixture. Wonderful!

The puree has a consistency similar to applesauce, but perhaps more watery. You can also add smaller amounts of green zucchini, carrots, butternut squash, etc. Try different ratios to see what your child likes.

Wondering how I came up with feeding chayote to my baby? Well, it wasn’t my idea. It was my husband. It comes from Mexico and is one of the first foods that babies are fed there.

Chayote is a good source of amino acids and vitamin C, as well as niacin, vitamin B6, magnesium, potassium, fiber, vitamin K, zinc, copper and manganese.

After 7 months of breastfeeding, I started according to the doctor’s instructions. As the first solid food, I gave the child rice cereal, three times a day. As a result, he became constipated. After four days without a diaper (which was unheard of for him), we ditched the rice cereal and went for the chayote. Once his diapers were back on, we gave him cereal again, but changed it to oatmeal instead of rice.

The baby is now 10 months old and is eating a wider variety of solid foods while continuing to breastfeed. Whenever he shows signs of straining to poop or his stool looks hard and his bottom is sore red, I go back to the chayote puree. Baby still eats it with enthusiasm and it works every time.
