How Can You Tell If Hair is Growing Back Properly After Telogen Effluvium (TE)?
I often write about female hair loss and tell my readers that recovery from telogen effluvium (TE, otherwise known as shedding) is all about regrowth. Because even if you’re shedding buckets of hair, if you can grow it back with healthy hair, then the volume and appearance of your hair won’t take as much of a hit as if you weren’t able to grow back hair or were only able to grow back unhealthy baby fine hair.
In response, people often ask me things like “how can I tell if my hair is growing back after TE?” or “how do I know my hair is growing back healthy after shedding?” I will answer these questions in the following article.
Seeing a short, thick regrowth that will greatly improve the appearance of your hair: My hairdresser assured me that a few months after my hair loss I would start to see small hairs coming in. I imagined it would look like a man cut blending in with my normal hair. (That wasn’t the case.) I started hunting these little guys every night. At first I didn’t see any and I became very discouraged. You need to know that regrowth is very short after TE, and since hair grows about 1/2 inch per month, it will take some time before you can easily see it.
However, here are some tricks to help you out. The first is that you can comb your hair against the grain (carefully of course if you’re still shedding.) Or if you don’t feel like combing, just tilt your hair/head in the opposite direction and then hold it there. Now look at the partial line and notice the little hairs popping out.
My favorite way to achieve regrowth is to use dry shampoo. Most dry shampoos are basically baby power in spray form. So before you go to bed (you don’t want to do this before you go to work or out), spritz a generous amount of dry shampoo on your lash line. It will go white, but the contrast between the white hairs in the section will allow the regrowth to be much more visible. And by the time you wake up, the white stuff will be gone (and cleaner) from your hair, so you don’t have to worry about brushing it out. This method also saves you from having to manipulate your hair so much that it falls out more.
How do I know my regrowth is healthy? What if it’s thin and doesn’t look like normal hair?: I will often ask my readers to not only look for regrowth, but to also evaluate the health of that hair. Many will answer, “Huh? How do I do that?” I’ll tell you. In order to really appreciate the hair, you will need to cut the new, short, growing hair. I know you hate it. But it is necessary.
The hairs you are pulling out should be regular in diameter and the root should be dark in color (not the white root that is associated with TE). A dark root indicates that the hair has been embedded into the scalp and has been properly nourished. Compare the diameter of your short hair with your longer hair. (In my case, there were a lot of them lying around.) Although sometimes the regrowth starts to thin out a bit, it should be comparable to longer hair.
Sometimes people describe their regrowth as thin, diseased, cobweb-like, or having a cotton candy texture. Take care of your hair if this is the case. Because, if this continues, you may be dealing with miniaturization, which is often the result of androgens, DHT, or clogged follicles. If this is the case, the way to regrow healthy hair is to remove this blockage and these androgens.
