10 Tips on Breeding Your Fancy Guppies

1. To begin with, just have one or two guppy trios of the same species. You should have about 8 to 10 tanks to keep just one strain. As for breeders and fry, a smaller 5 gal tank will suffice as a container. Gupkies are not difficult to breed because they can adapt to different water conditions. A pH of 7.2 at medium hardness is just the perfect water condition for them, but they can live with water that is between 6.4 and 8.6 provided they are properly acclimated. All you need to do is first place your newly purchased guppies in a clean breeding container (remember not to use soap to clean it) that is large enough to hold the triplets and large enough to add an equal volume of water. their new tank. DO NOT LET UNOPENED BAGS FLOAT. If you’re done putting your triplets in said container, let them sit there for a while.

After about 15 minutes, you can start gradually adding about 3-4 ounces of water to the tank. You should do this step by step over an hour until the volume of water has doubled. You don’t have to rush this dating process. Avoid the possibility of the fish jumping out of the container. If you have done all the steps and the fish have gotten used to it, slowly pour them into the new container. DO NOT GIVE THE FOOD YET. It will take a little watching and patience. An hour later you give them food only moderately, a little young shrimp in salt water or a pinch of any dry food is enough. You should wait until the next day to feed them again. In about a month, you can start raising fry. Be prepared to have an extra container for breeding each baby guppies. Finally, after about 3-4 weeks, you as future breeders should start sorting the virgin females from the rest of the litter.

2. The advantage of keeping fry in small containers is that they can easily find food for themselves without expending much energy. Once you’ve reached about 60 fry, it’s time to raise them individually in 10-gallon containers.

3. Feeding your newly hatched fry young brine shrimp every day until they reach 4 months of age is very important for their growth.

4. All the essentials and the choice of almost all the best breeders are inside the box filters. For this you will only need a layer of polyester cotton along with some marbles or gravel. I prefer to use dolomite gravel as a good water buffer. You can easily find dolomite in most pet stores that sell saltwater fish. Oyster is also a good substitute for dolomite. Other equally good types of filters are sponge filters, provided they are used correctly. Make sure the sponge filters are rinsed thoroughly without killing all the live bacteria.

5. Regarding water changes, 30-50% weekly changes are necessary for healthy growth and size. Always tap your tanks from the bottom and make sure you don’t add water to tanks that have previously lost water to evaporation. To know the condition of your tap and tank water, you should purchase a reliable water testing device. These pH, hardness and ammonia kits are user friendly. If you are new to keeping fish, you need to have a good understanding of the basic principles of water chemistry and its implications for keeping tropical fish.

6. You don’t have to feed the guppies every minute to keep them charming; they can survive with regular feeding. The main cause of death of tropical fish is overfeeding. The best food to give your guppies is small pinches of a good quality crushed flake food that should be fed at least every hour. Your guppies can have digestive problems if you feed them freeze dried food to avoid them if possible. If you are keen enough and notice that your fish are looking aggressive, it is best not to feed them yet.

7. The best time to sex the fry is 4 to 5 weeks after. To do this, breed enough females that you will need when planning your next group of breeders. You can easily tell if the fry are female because there is a dark spot directly above their anal fins, where fertilization takes place. This is referred to as the “gravid spot”. Maybe you don’t need inferior fish, so discard them instead. This is important because if you have the best breed, you don’t want it mixed with inferior ones. More importantly, if you have culled more than 20% of the litter, then you are actually raising mixed breed guppies.

8. Gravel and plants can cause your tanks to become overcrowded, so it’s better to keep them simple and bare, as this has something to do with staying in control and staying out of trouble. You can find more useful information about the life cycle of your guppies in some books. A book on the basics of tropical fish like your guppies would be very helpful if you have never had live birth experience. To tell if a female fish is pregnant, you will notice that it is fatter and rounder compared to other fish. Your female pisces may look angular just before giving birth. Their “gravid spot” will also appear darker.

9. Note that keep temperatures between 76 and 82 degrees for your breeders and fry, while older guppies can live between 72 and 76 degrees.

10. Don’t get too excited in the beginning by getting too many fish. Note that litters of healthy guppies occur every 30 to 36 days. It is not a smart option to mix different litters together until they are 3 months old. This also applies to guppies of the same breed. You will be surprised to find that you may actually have more breeding animals than expected. But the most important thing to remember when breeding them is to start with the best quality strain to save more, especially if you bought it from a guppy breeder known to have a good reputation.
