Top Ten Money Saving Tips For Mums

1. Check your benefits and apply for everything you’re entitled to:

It’s so easy to overlook the range of benefits available to you that you may be entitled to because it can seem like time constraints at home are likely to increase as you settle into your new role as a mother or manage your family unit. A good website to look at is called EntitledTo which will give you a form to fill out to see what you can claim.

Other useful sites include childcare voucher schemes, Healthy Start vouchers which give you £3 per child every week to redeem on fresh milk, fruit and veg and a £190 Money4Mum2be government grant to spend for whatever you want.

2. Make your own cleaning products straight from the pantry

White vinegar Dissolves: dirt, soap scum, deposits from hard water

It cleans everything from floors to countertops, is gentle enough for hard floors, and smells gone when it dries, so your home won’t smell like lettuce.

Cleaning Solution: Mix in a spray bottle

  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1 cup of water

Undiluted white vinegar

  • Great for hard water and dirt
  • Scrubbing the inside of the toilet bowl

Baking powder

  • Mildly abrasive and natural deodorant.
  • Great for dirty baths – sprinkle some on a damp sponge
  • Great for removing food deposits from the sink

Furniture polish recipe: Mix in a spray bottle

  • 1 cup of olive oil
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice

The lemon will cut through the dirt and the oil will give the wood a nice shine.

3. Budget and plan your weekly shop, love your leftovers and exercise portion control

  • Use the weekly planner or create your own to keep track of your shopping list and food
  • BOGOF doesn’t necessarily mean it will save you money – only buy these items if you know you’ll use them – remember – A bargain is only good if you really need it!
  • A website called LoveFoodHateWaste is the perfect resource for finding fantastic leftover recipes and portion calculators
  • Organize your kitchen cabinets using jars to see what you’re running out of
  • Buy seasonal and bulk fruit and veg – make sure you don’t buy too much unless your family are fruit fanatics as they will rot and need to be thrown away

4. Working moms packed a lunch

There’s a new craze in town and it’s known as Al’ Desko – yes, you get it, you eat your packed lunch at your desk. Goodbye soggy ham, cheese and tomato sandwiches and “hello” hummus and baked veggie tortilla!

Plan packed lunches around leftover evening meals and store staples in cupboards.

5. Make money from old cell phones

Trading in your old unused phones can earn you some extra cash and get rid of your electronics pile.

Check out the following companies:

  • Fonebank
  • Mazuma Mobile
  • Envirofone

There is also a charity called Stepping Stones Nigeria which helps abandoned children. As an alternative method of donation, you can send your old phones.

6. Join a toy library to reduce the cost of new toys

Why spend a fortune on brand new toys when you can join the toy library, meet other parents in a group and have a much needed coffee break while your little one plays.

Google your local toy library, it’s a really great way to make friends and you can borrow toys for as little as £0.50 for 2-4 weeks.

7. A bookworm? Exchange books – don’t buy

If you are not a member of a library and have a full library at home, why not exchange unwanted books online for ones you haven’t read.

They can join for free:

  • ReadItSwapIt
  • BookHopper
  • Trader title
  • Swapitshop

8. Cancel memberships and subscriptions you are not using

Do you go to the gym every week, watch all the Sky channels, do you really use all your minutes on your mobile plan? Go through your debits and monthly expenses and get rid of anything you don’t get maximum use for.

You could freeze your membership if you’re reluctant to cancel completely and look at bundling your mobile phone, home phone and internet into one cheaper package.

9. Give up unhealthy habits and trade them for the occasional treat

Do you have any naughty habits that you need to apologize for? Smoker? Junk food / takeaway / ready meals? Maybe it’s the bottle of wine with the meal in the evening. The credit crunch is giving people the motivation to get their finances in order, to use this challenging time to get their health and finances in order. Quitting will save you money every week that you could afford for yourself or your children, such as a fortnightly trip to the cinema (don’t forget to bring your own sweets and drinks) or how about a relaxing massage for yourself once a month.

10. One mom’s trash is another mom’s treasure

Do you have a big overview and throw away things that could be useful to someone else? So why not sell it online or attend a boot sale and sell all your unwanted stuff. Think of all the things you could put that spare cash towards.
