Steps to Help a Breastfeeding Mother Return to Work
Can a mother continue breastfeeding after returning to work? Well, you guessed it, you sure can! According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies should receive breast milk for the first 6 months after birth. There are a few steps you need to take now to get ready to get back to work.
1) Breastfeed at least 8-12 times every 24 hours. (or pump your breast if the baby is not breastfeeding).
2) Avoid using bottles or pacifiers during the first 3-4 weeks as this can reduce milk production. This is very true because if you want to continue breastfeeding once you leave the hospital, one thing babies don’t like is change. If the baby is used to the mother’s nipple, but you are trying to change, they will certainly let you know.
3) Begin expressing milk with a good quality personal or hospital rental pump at 3-4 weeks, or sooner if needed to relieve symptoms of engorgement. Electric pumps, which allow you to pump milk from both breasts at the same time, shorten the pumping time. This kind of electric pump worked wonders for me as I was one of those mothers who returned to work after maternity leave and continued to pump at work.
4) The best time to express milk is after feeding the baby. Freeze milk in 4 oz. milk storage bottles or bags. Many moms find that their milk supply is greater in the morning than in the evening.
5) Practice bottle feeding at least 2 weeks before returning to work. Babies often prefer breast feeding to bottle feeding, so it can be helpful to have a family member other than the mother offer to feed them until the baby gets used to the bottle pacifier. When choosing an artificial nipple for bottle-feeding a breastfed baby, it is important to use one that allows the baby to use the same tongue and jaw movements as it does at the breast.
