Cat Litter Disposal – Is Cat Litter Flushable?
What is the correct way to dispose of cat litter? If your cat doesn’t have a litter box, the answer is simple – clean up the poop with a tissue paper and rinse it, wipe the pee with another tissue paper and rinse it. But what to do after your cat does business in the crate? You can still get rid of it the same way – is cat litter flushable?
This depends on whether it is pee or feces and what type of cat litter you use. If you use sand for the cat’s toilet, you should not flush it. Even if not much sand sticks to cat poop, it will clog your toilet in the long run. The same goes for the other two main types of litter: clay cat litter and clumping cat litter. A plumber’s bill for a clogged pipe will ruin you.
If you use crystal litter, which is made of silica gel, your job of disposing of cat litter is a little easier. Crystal cat litter absorbs cat urine without clumping, making it flushable in small amounts. They also don’t stick to cat poop very well, so you can also flush them down the toilet. However, it is still not recommended to do this regularly in the long term.
As for biodegradable cat litter, it depends. Some of these are made of fairly large pellets that could also clog your pipes. Others are made of wood or sawdust and will pass without any problems. However, if you have a septic tank, be aware that this material does not necessarily degrade immediately. We could be talking years – which could cause your septic tank to fill up quite a bit. Somehow the thought of used litter and cat poo coming out of my backed up sewers makes me break out in a cold sweat.
Some manufacturers have started making flushable cat litter, in the face of calls for more convenience. Of course, these flushable cat litters cost more. To make cat litter flushable, they use a variety of biodegradable materials that should pass safely through your pipes. These newer types of cat litter won’t turn into sludge that can clog your drains – in theory. Some plumbers differ. In the course of their business, they went to homes where sewer lines and water lines were clogged with flushable cat litter. Or at least that’s what the embarrassed and distressed occupant of the house said. Who is lying here? I don’t know, but it’s probably not recommended to flush large amounts of garbage down the toilet.
It’s still best to dispose of the bulk of your cat’s litter the old fashioned way – either bagging it with the rest of your litter or carefully burying it somewhere in the garden. In the garden, your cat’s urine and feces would make good fertilizer for your grass and flowers. Cat urine and feces can contain dangerous bacteria, so you should not use it to fertilize vegetables and fruit trees.
I have to admit, a true flushable cat litter would be awfully convenient when it’s snowing or raining heavily. It would make cat litter disposal really easy.
