Weaning From Breastfeeding – 3 Food Substances to Avoid, For Now (Part 1)

I have heard countless weaning/breastfeeding “horror” stories from some moms. They say that when they were weaning, they got it wrong at one point or another. But one particular mom stands out. She said she was so happy her 6-month-old daughter responded to the cereal and was weaned off formula almost immediately that she included cow’s milk as a cereal thickener a few days later.

Result? Her baby had a rare allergic reaction to milk and it made her lactose intolerant. Unfortunately, her mother’s breast milk was also part of the intolerance. So they had to spend a lot of money on lactose intolerant milk supplements.

The above anecdote is a jarring reminder to mothers that before babies reach 12 months, they should carefully choose their baby’s food. The salt content of food can actually cause kidney damage and is also a major factor in contracting diabetes later in life.

– Cow milk. As mentioned above, it can cause lactose intolerance in your child. This is because it contains milk proteins that your baby may not be taking in yet. This can be difficult for your baby to digest and absorb, and can cause nausea or stomach aches – and it’s no great stress for a mother to see her baby in pain. Also, avoid skimmed milk and low-fat dairy products completely, as they do not provide enough iron, vitamin E and essential fatty acids. It also releases too much protein, sodium and potassium. And studies have shown that infants fed cow’s milk suffer from iron deficiency.

– Unpasteurized milk. A baby (or even a toddler) must ALWAYS be given pasteurized milk. In pasteurization, the milk is heated (but not boiled so it doesn’t curdle), killing bacteria and some antibodies that the body doesn’t really need. If the milk is not pasteurized, some bacteria like E. Coli would thrive. If given to infants and toddlers, they can have severe diarrhea that could eventually lead to dehydration and loss of electrolytes in the body, sometimes (but rarely) leading to death.

When it comes to the child, the mother should always be protective. His diet is no exception.
