Postcard Marketing – How To Successfully Combine Traditional Marketing With Internet Marketing

I remember it like it was yesterday. I had a list of wires I had purchased and started working on the phones. Have you ever done this before? You talk to people who like to hear you, don’t you? Yeah…we don’t all want that.

From time to time: “How did you come up with my name?” “I’m not interested!” “I told the last 3 people to take me off your list!”…and so on and so forth.

Yuck. Here I was trying to do one of the most innocent and noble things a man can do, provide for his family. To do this, I chose a path that would allow me to help others gain the same freedom I sought. I didn’t call people cold. I called people asking for information. In time, if you persevere, you will learn to brush them off. However, when you reach out to genuinely try to help someone and they attack you, it hurts.

Most people new to the industry don’t survive this rejection for long. But is this how we do it right? There’s no better way, right?

I used to think so, and then someone told me about postcards. I hear they generate a HUGE response……20-30%. People who call YOU. I had to try it. Sure enough, it worked. A few days after I mailed the cards, call after call after call after call came in. People called me. I was addicted. I would NEVER have to call a list of prospects again and have people yell at me for calling them.

So what is so powerful about postcard marketing? Well, I’d say it’s a combination of leads chasing you and leads coming to your business through duplicable online systems. The moment you realize you married them together, you’ll go to bed at night feeling like you just found a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

How would that make you feel? How would you sleep at night if you KNEW you were going to have several people calling you every day who were hungry to hear about your business? Would you sleep at all? Certainly not the first time it happened to me.

Ok, what do you need for a successful postcard campaign? Also, is there an advantage to using postcards with internet marketing over direct internet marketing?

I will answer the second question first. The advantage of using postcards is that they can jump start your internet marketing campaign. The beauty of internet marketing is that it is highly effective (if done correctly) and most of it is FREE. Free works well for most people because most new distributors are broke when they enter the industry. However, it takes some time to get an internet campaign off the ground. The biggest advantage of adding postcards to your marketing is that it speeds up the process at low advertising costs.

ok what do you need Well, it probably goes without saying that you need postcards. Buy postcards directly from the post office. You can even get them on their website if you want to order online. Go to usps.com and look under “stationary”. Each is $0.28 and the stamp is already applied.

You will need a mailing list. There are multiple sources for the list. You can buy OLD leads from many top sellers for as little as $0.03 each. They will usually be a few weeks to a few months old. Still, they will work surprisingly well.

You can also purchase general demographic mailing lists. Look for people aged 25-35, married, home owners and making $40-$75k a year. Buying a list of this kind will give you more targeted mailings, but it will also be more expensive. Personally, I’ve always used the cheaper old leads.

Ok, that’s it for your offline tools. For your online tools, you’ll need a FULL video pitch website, a squeeze page (also called a lead capture page), and an email campaign. These are the tools you will use to present your business to those who call you.

Now that we have all the tools, what do we need to do? Well, the first step is to write your postcards. Take your mailing list and address ONLY the name and address of the potential customers on the front page. DO NOT…EVER…EVER…EVER put your return address on the postcard. If the address is fake or undeliverable, let the post office throw it away. A return address will reduce the curiosity factor and people can also judge you based on silly things like your street name. Bottom line, your response rate will drop if you use a return address, so don’t do it.

HAND WRITE the following message on the back:

(prospect name),

I would like to talk to you about a part-time management position at my company.

(Your name)

(Your telephone number)

That is all. Write them like this and put them in the mail. I recommend sending 200 per week. If you get a 20% response (very normal for postcards), 200 will give you 40 new leads to call you every week. Do you think you can get a sign up with 40 people calling week after week?

What do you do when these people call? First, understand that most have no idea what this card is about. They simply came home, got the mail, and found this really unusual postcard that was handwritten. Simply to satisfy curiosity, they had to call. It’s alright. In order to handle the situation, you have to start asking questions. Since they are calling YOU, you are automatically positioned to interview them.

Here are the questions I always ask myself:

1. “What made you respond to the postcard and what might you be looking for?”

2. “What is your current occupation?”

3. “Do you consider yourself studious?”

4. “Do you have any leadership experience in or outside the workplace?”

If you don’t find any issues based on their answers, tell them you’d like to move on to step 2 and email them a SHORT video (no matter how long – short is relative) that gives an overview of the company and compensation System. If you’re having trouble or want more information over the phone, say, “It’s all on video, what’s your email address?” If they still object, they’re not the person you’re looking for, move on.

The email should be a link to your squeeze page. Therefore, in order to see the video, they have to log in, which not only tells you they were there, but also allows you to stay in email contact until they tell you otherwise. You shouldn’t call anyone back if they don’t sign up.

When you call back, they SHOULD hear the whole story through a third party duplicate system. Simply verify that they’ve watched the video and ask if they’re open to more information. If they say yes, schedule a meeting so they can participate in your company conference call with an overview. Make sure you tell them that they will then get all their questions answered.

After the conference call, ask, “What questions do you need answered before we get started?” If they have questions, answer them. If not, help them enroll. Congratulations. You have just successfully combined traditional marketing with internet marketing in a highly duplicable way.

I have personally sponsored several people using this method. I know it works. I also understand that some of you may be in a company that lacks some of the pieces I mentioned above. I’ve tried to approach this as generally as possible, but any exact approach will likely need to be tweaked slightly for each company. The policy will still apply.
