MSM Benefits Asthma, Arthritis Sufferers
About four years ago, my mom asked me to look into something that would help her asthma. She suffered from it for more than 30 years and felt that she would almost certainly die of an asthma attack.
I started researching and came across MSM (Methyl-sulfonyl-methane), an organic sulfur (macromineral) that occurs naturally in plants, animals and the human body. It is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body and is used in every cell.
Sulfur is essential for healthy hair, skin and nails. It stimulates bile secretion and helps maintain proper brain function. In combination with vitamin C, it disinfects the blood and resists bacteria, parasites and fungi. MSM helps muscles, skin and lungs maintain flexibility while controlling body inflammation.
One of the most effective ways that adequate sulfur levels can affect the body is that when new cells are formed, sulfur is incorporated into the cell wall, allowing it to be more permeable to nutrients. Without sulfur, it is difficult for nutrients to enter the cell wall.
Sulfur comes from the evaporation of ocean waters and is then found in plants through precipitation. If rainwater is not used in agriculture, but is replaced by municipal or treated water, sulfur is not found in the products.
Some plant sources of sulfur are asparagus, garlic, onions, and green leafy vegetables, especially watercress and Swiss chard. It is best to eat them raw and uncooked, as sulfur is easily destroyed by heat.
MSM supplementation can benefit arthritis sufferers by improving joint flexibility, reducing stiffness, swelling and pain, and increasing circulation and cell vitality.
Sulfur is helpful for asthmatics by preventing inflammation and regulating the fluid that lines the surface of the airways in the lungs. It allows the lungs to be more flexible and increases lung capacity.
Methylsulfonylmethane is considered extremely safe and toxicity is virtually unheard of. In fact, no toxic effects have been demonstrated in humans receiving up to 1 gram per kilogram of body weight (70 grams or more) per day for 30 days.
My mom started on 1-2 grams (1 gram equals 1000mg) a day, worked up to 8 grams for 3-4 months and then weaned off again. Since using her “puffer” every day, she has never used it. She no longer takes any steroids or other medications and has been asthma free for the past 4 years.
Note: Sulfur should be divided into at least two servings per day, as its half-life is only 12 hours in the body.
Some other conditions that may benefit from the addition of sulfur supplementation are:
- Diabetes
- Allergy
- Wound healing
- Pain relief
- Eye problems
- Cramps (and PMS)
- Stress
- Snoring
- Skin diseases including psoriasis
- Parasite infestation
- Toxic metal poisoning
