15 Top Tips to Save Money

When I ask people what their financial goals are, saving money is always in the top 3. But they also tell me they don’t know how or don’t have any good ideas. Good news – I’ve done the work for you and hope to challenge your thinking.

Wouldn’t you rather use some of the money for something else right now – paying off debt, saving for a vacation, investing, etc.?

o 1. Decide what you want to save and transfer it from your main account as soon as you get paid

Somehow you make the rest work within your budget. I’ve been saving this way for the last 10 years and only had to withdraw part of the money about 6 times. If you have nothing budgeted for savings, then start with a smaller amount. You will soon join the savings and this amount will start to increase.

o 2. Write down your expenses day by day.

Yes, it’s a little annoying, especially at first. But if you want to know where your money is going, this is the fastest way to find out. And you’ll notice that after a week or two of charging your money, you’ll automatically start correcting your rate. You suddenly realize that your daily habit of coke and bar one from the machine at 3pm is increasing significantly every month. I’m not saying you should never have fun. Buy two snack packs of chocolates at the grocery store that will last you an entire month and you’ve just saved yourself a ton of money.

o 3. Never go shopping on an empty stomach.

You end up with a cart full of junk food that you wouldn’t normally buy if you weren’t starving. If I just follow this one tip, I will reduce my monthly food bill by about 30%!

at 4 Make a to-do list before you leave the house

When you do this, you can plan your route and also make sure you do everything you need to. Otherwise, it’s a case of “we forgot to pay the phone” once you get home. Then you waste time and gas when you have to go back the same way.

at 5 Always, always, always use a shopping list

You can download one from my website. Use a fridge magnet and attach it to the front of the fridge. Then train your family to label the item as soon as it is forthcoming empty. What’s the point of adding toilet rolls to the list when you’ve just used up the last one?! Once you’re in the store, it’s easy to think of all the sale brands. A shopping list will help you focus. I’m not saying you’re not allowed to be flexible. Simply with a shopping list, you are sure to get everything you need.

at 6 Check the bottom shelves in stores

Stores pack all the most expensive items at eye level, so the next time you’re shopping for dressing or whatever, don’t just grab the first thing you see. Compare prices on all brands and don’t forget to check out all the items. It will take a while the first time you do it, but once you get used to it, you’ll know.

at 7 Buy only enough fresh produce for your needs

With the signs “3 bags of tomatoes for 20 CZK” and “2 cucumbers for 10 CZK” you can easily get caught. But if you think about your needs, you will find that you don’t need 3 bags just for 2 people. I used to think that they only sell them packaged like this, until one day I took one bag of tomatoes to the checkout and… lo and behold, nothing strange happened. They only charged me for one bag!

at 8 Try shopping online, especially if you are an unruly shopper

We have good friends who have been shopping online for about 3 years. It promises to save at least 20% every month, after paying the delivery fee. That’s because it totally eliminates all impulse purchases – food for a hungry stomach and cute things.

at 9 Never go shopping when you are upset or angry.

This is a variation of number 3 except that you will likely be feeding your emotional hunger. All the ladies know what I’m talking about. You’re upset about something that happened at work, you go to the mall and you end up buying lipstick, a purse, or clothes you don’t need. We all do it – some of us just buy bigger items than others.

at 10 Always pay your bills on time to avoid interest charges.

Remember, with credit cards, your purchases are interest free for 45 days, BUT if you’re one day late, you’re not just charged interest for the day; interest is charged from the date of purchase.

at 11 Plan your meals

Meal planning for the week (like I do) or the month will save you money. Firstly, you can use up all the food in the freezer before buying more, and secondly, you will know exactly what you need to get in the shops. I look in the freezer to check if there is enough food for the week. Then I make a list and go shopping. Then on Sunday afternoon I decide which meals we will eat on which days and attach my meal plan to the side of the fridge. It then takes me no more than 30 minutes every night to get dinner on the table. See? You will save time and money! Download your meal plan from my website.

at 12 Eat more legumes

Legumes are things like lentils, beans, chickpeas, etc. They are a great source of protein and you can use them to replace meat in one or two meals a week. For example, use lentils as a ground meat substitute for Bolognese sauce or top baked potatoes with chickpea, tomato, spinach and cheese sauce. Delicious! Not only will you save some money on meat, but you will also be healthier.

at 13. Limit the number of cleaning products you use

I use multipurpose cleaner, toilet sanitizer, dishwashing liquid, and multipurpose gel. I could combine the last two, but I have a confession to make – I’m addicted to my brand of dishwashing liquid. I use the multipurpose gel for car washing, window and mirror cleaning, as a shower spray, carpet cleaning, etc. Just squeeze a generous amount into an empty spray bottle, fill with water and shake to mix.

at 2 p.m. Check out the free car wash

I noticed that many gas stations offer a free “wash and go” if you spend a certain amount on gas. Look around and start using these services.

at 3 p.m. Switch from chilled fizzy drinks to water

You’ll save hundreds every month and… you’ll also be healthier and lose weight.

And now as a bonus… hire a financial coach

Yes, it is an investment at first. But over time the rewards will be HUGE. Your coach will help you accelerate your progress and help you pay off debt and save some money.

Happy saving! My wish is financial happiness!
