Do You Need A License If You’re A Travel Nurse?
There are no standard rules regarding the licensing required in different states. Efforts have been made to standardize the process with a licensing compact where you can use your nursing license in program states without having to recertify your license. More than a dozen states are involved in the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrators (NLCA) program.
However, if the state you will be working in is not part of the program, the licensing process will vary from state to state, with different CEUs (continuing education units), processing time, costs, and temporary license expiration dates. Not many states offer permanent licenses.
However, it should not be difficult to obtain a temporary license from most states. Just be aware that the rules and regulations governing licensing for non-program states are likely to be different. For example, in most states you don’t have to show your CEUs to get a license, but you can if you’re renewing. To avoid being overwhelmed by the complexities of licensing in different states, the best thing to do first is to decide on the state you would most like to work in and then do some research on how it works there.
One of the benefits offered by the agency is license reimbursement, although this is usually a portion rather than the full amount and is paid once you begin treatment.
If you are working with a travel nurse recruitment agency, the agency should be able to advise you on the license required and how long it will take to obtain the license and what you need to do. If you can’t wait and are desperate to travel right away, it’s a good idea to ask your recruiter which states offer the easiest and fastest licensing process. There are some states known as “walk through” states that can issue you your license the same day if you take the required paperwork to their office.
If you had the option of getting a temporary or permanent license, there are pros and cons to getting one or the other. With temporary licenses, there is a limited period of time during which the license becomes inactive, sometimes up to 3 months. So if you find that you enjoy working in that state and would like to expand your employment or work at another healthcare facility in the same state, at least with a permanent license, you have more flexibility.
There are benefits to renewing a license obtained in your home state. One is that you can increase your tax benefits, but to do so you must be resident in your home state and work from time to time. This is especially an option when you return home for a while to see family and friends. However, you may not want to return to your home state and you don’t want the hassle of maintaining permanent residency, then if that’s the case, you can leave your home state license inactive. Deactivating your license status is probably a good idea because it costs nothing to leave it inactive and the process is much easier if you want to reactivate your license than trying to reapply for your nurse license.
All in all, the licensing process is usually not a big issue that would prevent you from traveling, as the process is simple in most states. It just helps to think about licensing requirements as you time your nursing tasks and organize your various nursing commitments.
