House Training a Puppy

No dog training means more to most new puppy owners than the first important lesson: Not in the House!

Potty training your dog outside of the home, not inside, usually begins between six and eight weeks of age. Dogs begin house training at four weeks of age, but at such a young age it is unlikely that a puppy will have sufficient muscle control.

As with any dog training, the trainer’s patience is as important as the dog’s temperament. “Sit”, “stay” and other behaviors can often be learned in a few days. “Potty” training can take weeks – sometimes just two, often a month or more.

As with other learned behaviors, you should look for signs of impending action, then enforce and direct them with a voice command followed by praise. In this case, this technique works to the trainer’s advantage because all dogs will naturally go to the toilet. The trick is to get them to do it when and where you want them to!

Look for signs like circling or squatting, then pick up the puppy, say “out” and rush outside. The puppy may circle a little more, but often immediately hunches over. At the beginning, say “quickly” (or some other phrase) in a clear, firm (but not angry) voice. Wait for the puppy to finish and praise him a lot.

You won’t always be able to catch a puppy about to start, but don’t be upset or impatient if the dog goes to the toilet indoors. It takes a while for your dog to learn to tell you it’s time to ‘go outside’. It also takes time to develop the muscles needed to control the bladder and bowels.

Young dogs need to go to the toilet on average every 2-3 hours. If you haven’t seen evacuation behavior during this time, take the dog outside anyway. Give the command “quick” and wait. At first, the dog will usually have no idea what you want.

Again, even when you are outside, it helps to wait and observe the desired behavior and then issue the command. This helps the dog associate the command with the behavior. If the dog doesn’t go away after a few minutes and a few “quick” commands, take him back inside for an hour. Of course, if you notice the behavior in front of the toilet in a shorter time, go out again immediately.

Dogs have a surprising ability to quickly learn what their ‘alpha’ (pack leader) wants. This is almost always achieved by associating a verbal command with a behavior followed by praise. Punishment is usually counterproductive and nowhere more so than in toilet training. Never rub your dog’s nose with waste.

Some prefer to train with paper and/or a crate. The puppy can be trained to go on the newspaper or on one of the chemically treated puppy pads that are designed for this purpose. Some small breeds that live indoors all day don’t need to go outside at all.

However, this technique has several disadvantages. Unlike cats, dogs will rarely go to a perfumed toilet. Newspaper (even if the top layer is removed after the dog leaves) will eventually create an unpleasant smell in the house.

Also, long before the smell becomes unattractive to humans, dogs can smell their own distinctive aroma. They don’t find it unattractive – quite the opposite. And that’s the problem.

Dogs that are paper trained often prefer to eliminate indoors. Sometimes they will miss the paper by just an inch, creating a mess when cleaning up.

Once the odor is in the carpet, the dog will often seek out that spot as its proper “place to go.” This makes training the dog to go to the toilet outside even more difficult. It’s better to have a few accidents than to develop a habit that’s hard to break.

Patience, praise and consistency are the keys to any dog training. Exclusion training is the first test for you and your dog.
