UK Theme Parks – Alton Towers
Set in over 500 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, Alton Towers Theme Park, Staffordshire, UK is one of the largest theme parks in the UK and has something for all the family.
First opened in 1980, Alton Towers Theme Park began as little more than a pilgrimage and has now grown into a world-renowned theme park with some of the most innovative attractions, live shows and multiple themes – Old MacDonalds Farm, Merrie England, Gloomy Wood, Forbidden Valley, Katanga Canyon, Ug Land, Adventure Land, Cred Street and X-sector. There’s a water park, towers and gardens to cater to the quieter among us.
Alton Towers Theme Park is a thrill-seeking world for kids, adults and adrenaline junkies alike. Unfortunately, some slopes have height restrictions, meaning smaller kids can’t ride some of the most popular big rides, although there are plenty of smaller rides that are just as suitable for younger and smaller kids to test their white knuckles. .
You’ll never go hungry at Alton Towers theme park. There are many places in the park itself to satisfy all food tastes. Fresh fish and chips, chicken and ribs, pizzas, hamburgers, fried chicken, pastries, cakes, coffee, thick shakes, baked potatoes, waffles, ice cream, barbecue, donuts, sandwiches, fajitas, nachos, halal, Asian cuisine, hot dogs in roll, Salads. Not to mention the choice of restaurants and bars nearby.
Alton Towers theme park is famous for its extreme rides, including Nemesis, Europe’s first inverted roller coaster where people hang with their feet dangling from floorless cars. First opened in 1994, Nemesis was built in trenches to reduce its height above ground to comply with planning restrictions requiring construction below the tree line. Nemesis is claimed to be the most intense ride ever.
Alton Towers theme park is also home to Oblivion, the world’s first vertical roller coaster. Construction on Oblivion began in 1997 and first opened in 1998. It has a simple layout with an elevation of 180 feet. Before the crash, the cars are held by the brake for a few seconds before plunging into a dark tunnel followed by a 180-degree banked turn. While the passengers are suspended and waiting for the fall, they can see the sign “Don’t Look Down” on the ground, adding to the atmosphere of the impending fall. Oblivion is part of the PC Game RollerCoaster Tycoon.
Still very popular at Alton Towers theme park is the Corkscrew Roller Coaster. This is the oldest ride in the park and has been the most promoted roller coaster in the UK. This roller coaster has two inversions and many people find it rough but still intense.
Air is the world’s first flying coaster. Riders find themselves suspended horizontally and face down as if flying. Air cost Alton Towers £12m and opened in 2002. After riders take their seats and restraints are deployed, a mobile floor platform descends and you are asked to ‘get ready for air’. Car seats rotate 90 degrees forward so that passengers are facing adults. You are then told, “Get into position….now fly!!” The ride begins and you slide down 2,756 feet of track at a maximum speed of 46.6 mph (75 km/h) with a maximum G force of 3.5. Air is the only flying track that has a half zero approach.
Rita – Queen of Speed is the first Alton Towers roller coaster since the Thunderlooper was removed in 1997. The ride is based on drag racing and will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds and into turns you pull 4.7 g. Rita opened in 2005 and reaches a maximum height of 69 feet (21 m) and careers around 2,100 feet of track.
The Runaway Mine Train reopened at Alton Towers in April 2007 after being closed for over 8 months due to a clutch failure. This ride usually takes two laps and is quite intense, especially in the tunnel along the Rapids River. The Runaway Mine Train first opened in 1992 and cost Alton Towers £3 million.
There are many more rides at Alton Towers, some intense and some calm. On a warm sunny day, a visit to the Water World is a must. Expect to get wet though, which all adds to the thrill of trying to stand where you think you won’t……….
Due to the sheer size of Alton Towers theme park, it is said that you cannot do it all in one day. There are two hotels on site (Alton Towers Hotel or Splash Landings Hotel) so you can rest overnight and have the courage to go the next day to visit the places you missed and return to your favorites.
Alton Towers opens its doors at 09:30, but the rides and attractions don’t open until 10:00. Closing times vary during the season. Prices are cheaper if you book online, but if you book online you must book at least 48 hours in advance. Check out the Alton Towers theme park [http://www.altontowers.com] for prices.
All in all, a visit to this theme park is a must, but be prepared for long lines for the most popular attractions. After visiting Alton Towers, get ready for a good night’s sleep as it can be an exhausting day. I love it.
