Glucosamine for Dogs – Help Your Pet With This Natural Supplement for Arthritis
My 8 year old Shar Pei was diagnosed with arthritis so I decided to research glucosamine for dogs.
I like to avoid chemicals and drugs where possible, and I wanted a healthy alternative to the medications a vet might prescribe for Jake. My vet told me that he has seen good results in several of his other patients using glucosamine for dogs.
Let me start from the beginning.
Early symptoms of arthritis
Jake normally acts like a puppy. She (yes, she!) gets out of bed in the morning, eager to go out and explore her kingdom to make sure there aren’t any squirrels or stray cats lurking out there.
Lately though, she didn’t seem to jump out of bed like she usually does. She stood up slowly, carefully. She was acting like a very old dog! Laying outside in the sun made her feel better during the day, but sometimes I’ve also seen her limp or prefer one back leg.
Since Jake can’t talk (like most dogs), we had to pay close attention to see if he felt any pain or discomfort. My husband and I started watching her closely. The slow getting up continued and then she started to lay on the tiled bathroom floor and suddenly fell.
We took her to our vet. He told us she had arthritis and that was not unusual for a dog her age. He also said that she tried to soothe inflamed joints from arthritis by falling on the cold bathroom floor.
The vet said other symptoms can also include lagging when you go for a walk, lethargy, difficulty climbing stairs or playing, and sometimes even pulling away when you try to pet your dog.
How does a dog get arthritis?
Like humans, dogs have cartilage that covers the ends of bones where they sit in sockets, preventing bone from “grinding” against bone. (Cartilage is what your nose and ears are, under your skin, if you want to see what it’s like.) As we and our pets age, we lose the ability to repair and maintain the cartilage in these pits. As the cartilage wears away, the pain is intense.
Our bodies produce glucosamine naturally, but as we age, its production declines. This is where glucosamine supplementation can be beneficial for dogs (and humans).
Glucosamine for dogs is made from sea shells
Glucosamine supplements are obtained from crustacean shells. Because the shells are usually thrown away, glucosamine is relatively cheap to produce. Supplements allow your dog’s (or yours) glucosamine levels to return to levels that were previously normal for your pet. When the level increases, the articular cartilage can be encouraged to regenerate. Unfortunately, however, glucosamine does not cure arthritis.
Your dog will need to continue taking canine glucosamine supplements for the rest of his life to continue to see beneficial results. If you stop feeding the supplements, the levels will drop and you will start to see pain from arthritis or other degenerative diseases again.
Glucosamine supplements for dogs come in four different derivatives: Glucosamine Hydrochloride or HCL, Glucosamine Sulfate, Glucosamine 2KCL, and Glucosamine NaCl. Most vets recommend avoiding 2KCL and NaCl as they are much less effective.
Jake’s New Life or Second Childhood
After an afternoon of reading on the internet, we found a glucosamine supplement for dogs that sounds good. We found a liquid supplement that we can pour over Jake’s food that was a much better solution for us than a glucosamine pill for dogs! (I don’t know about you, but trying to force a pill down a resistant dog’s throat is not something I ever want to do again!)
On the fourth day, we noticed that Jake got up faster, not as stiffly. But about a week later she ran up the stairs after me! (This was something she hadn’t done in a while. She was walking up the stairs, but slowly.) And after about 2 weeks, no more lying on the tile floor either. Glucosamine supplement for dogs made all the difference.
Jake seems to have fully recovered and is acting like her goofy puppy. Hard to believe he is an 8 year old dog!
So would I recommend a glucosamine supplement for dogs? Bet you do. Not only is it nice to have our goofy pup back, but it’s nice to see that he’s pain free.
After seeing the fantastic results of this glucosamine supplement for dogs, I am seriously looking for one that will do the same for a 57 year old female!
