Tomato Troubles – The Problems of Growing Tomatoes

If you are going to grow tomatoes, you will encounter some problems. I call them “Tomato Troubles”. But they are not really hard. This article will help you identify and manage them. With a little luck, you may not even encounter problems with growing tomatoes.

The main problems can be divided into three topics:

* Water
* Climate
* Pests

Water. It is strange to think of water as a problem when there is no drought. But it can be. Watering should be done on a very regular schedule: usually in the morning or in the cool evening, but never on a hot day. If you water slowly and deeply, the plant will set its roots deep and be a stronger plant. Water at the base of the plant. not out of mind. When watering from above, you risk mold. If you miss watering from your regular schedule, continue with the schedule. Do not flood the plant in an attempt to “catch up”. Improper or ineffective watering can deny the plant the calcium it needs. Calcium is transported from the soil to the plant roots by water. If that’s not enough, you’ll find a soft brown spot on the bottom of the tomato. The best thing to do is to pick off the infected fruit and give the healthy ones a better chance. How much water can bring arguments among tomato gardeners. Everyone agrees that a tomato uses a lot of water, but they disagree on the definition of batches. Some say the equivalent of a good inch per week; others say to water whenever the surface of the soil seems dry.

Climate. Tomatoes need a long growing season. They want warm air and warm soil. Therefore, do not plant your seedlings until you are sure that you are at least 2 weeks after the last frost in your area. You can help warm the soil by covering it with black plastic. If you live in the north or a colder climate, you may do better to leave the seedlings in a greenhouse or indoors for a while before planting them out. Sunny windowsills work well. In southern or hot climates you may want to plant them in filtered shade as they will burn in the sun. I live in Southern California, but not in the hot inland valleys. We are about 5 miles from the ocean so we don’t get triple digit temperatures. Full sun works well where I live. At the other end of the growing season, you may need to cover your tomatoes with plastic to create a mini greenhouse so the fruit can continue to ripen if the autumn cools too quickly. Or you can pick the fruit and let it ripen again on that sunny windowsill! Fried Green Tomatoes are more than the title of an old movie, they are quite delicious. Or you can make a green tomato relish. That’s good too!

Pests. This is a big problem with tomatoes. The worst are aphids, whiteflies, hornworms and slugs. A hose spray will often wash the bugs away, but they will quickly return. A solution of water, dishwashing liquid and vinegar used as a spray usually lasts longer. Planting marigolds, petunias or anise seems to deter these unwanted guests. I was told that casting worms into the soil will deter whitefly. I have no experience with it. I was always afraid that I would break off the leaves when I tried to bury them around the plant. The worm is a fertilizer and I dig it in a bit when preparing the soil. But since I also plant marigolds, I can’t say what keeps them away. There are good mistakes. Ladybugs are real helpers. In fact, you can buy them and introduce them to your garden. If you and your neighbors have enough aphids (their favorite) and other tasty insects, they’ll hang around all summer and help you garden!

Snails like beer! Pop some into a pie pan at night and in the morning you’ll find the results of their death party! But put the pie pan where your dog can’t find it. Need I say more? The cats don’t seem to care, at least none of mine. The worst is the horned one. They’re moth larvae and they’re big and green, hard to see and super destructive. They can eat an entire small plant overnight. Did I mention they are big? Huge is better. About 4 inches long and thicker than my finger! They tend to come out at night, so a bit of careful inspection with a flashlight just before bed is useful. If you find one, just select it. They are harmless to you. But they love your tomato leaves.

All of this may sound like a big deal, but it really isn’t. And homegrown tomatoes are worth it. There is no comparison to store bought!
