How To Collect The Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series

One of the most famous and highly collectible series of the early genre is famous Fantasy series for adults published by Ballantine Books from 1969 to 1974. The series grew out of the popularity of Ballantine’s paperback editions of JRR Tolkien’s now famous quartet, as well as a number of other fantasy classics first seen in paperback. Capitalizing on the success of the first set of books and seeing a growing desire for fantasy literature, Ian and Betty Ballantine enlisted author/editor Lin Carter to create a fantasy paperback series. Carter produced a seminal fantasy series including many works that have been out of print and unavailable for some time.

The series can be identified by the distinctive “Unicorn Head” colophon in the upper right corner and/or the phrase “A Ballantine Adult Fantasy” in the upper left corner of the cover. The colophon was revised in December 1969 and appears first in this month’s publication, Hannes Bok’s Wizard’s ship. Each publication also included an introduction by Carter.

Most collectors of the BAF series include sixteen books published by Ballantine prior to the series, starting with Tolkien’s the hobbit as the predecessors of the official series. Also usually included are two non-fiction books by Lin Carter himself on the works of JRR Tolkien and HP Lovecraft.

In addition, two other books are commonly considered part of the BAF series, even though they were published after the edition was dropped. The first, published in June 1974, is by H. Warner Munn Merlin’s ring which includes an introduction by Carter and a second by Evangeline Walton prince of Annwn, which lacks the Carter logo and introduction, but completes the Mabinogi cycle begun by Walton’s three books published under the Unicorn Head colophon.

Being a paperback series, with a well-defined checklist, a finite number of books, and the generally low price of most BAF titles, collecting the series is easy and satisfying. Copies of many books often turn up at rummage sales and used bookstores. Vendors at conventions usually have a number of titles available, and much of the series is available online. This is an excellent series for the beginning collector.

All of the books in the series featured the distinctive Unicorn Head on the cover and included an introduction by Carter.
