Understanding Canine Bloat
Overview
Canine bloat is a stomach condition caused by an increase in gas levels. It is a serious condition that can be fatal for your dog. One type of this condition is bloating with GDV (gastric dilatation-volvulus). When this happens, the stomach will contain too much gas, resulting in a 180-360 degree twist from the esophagus (inlet) to the duodenum (outlet). GDV bloat is the second leading cause of death in dogs after cancer.
Twisting the stomach is very dangerous because it restricts the entry and exit of this organ, which leads to the death of the stomach tissues. Nutrients and oxygen can no longer be processed and distributed, causing death if untreated.
Causes
Unfortunately, the medical world has not yet discovered the exact causes of bloating. The general idea is that this is caused by excessive eating and drinking after exercise, as this activity (exercise) can cause gas build-up when done after a meal.
Here are other factors that can contribute to bloat in dogs: stress, heredity, elevated food bowls, physical characteristics – a large deep chest, and the dog’s temperament.
Symptoms
Symptoms of dog bloat are: anxiety, restlessness, vomiting or trying to vomit, whining, excessive drooling, bloated belly, fast heart rate, pale gums and difficulty breathing.
Who is at risk?
There are certain dog breeds that are at risk for bloat, and these are more common in large breeds. These include: Great Dane, Akita, German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Irish Setter, Bloodhound, Boxer, St. Bernard, Golden Retriever and Doberman.
Age can also be a factor. Although it can occur in puppies, it has been found to be more common in adult dogs.
Therapy
If you notice the above symptoms, be sure to call your veterinarian immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment can save your pet’s life. Initial treatment involves inserting a tube called a tochar into the walls of the stomach as this removes the gas. Once this is done, the vet will operate on the stomach to untwist it.
Secondary treatment may also be provided if necessary.
Prevention
Due to the many causes of flatulence, it is difficult to ensure prevention. But here are things you can start with and maintain:
1. Feed your dog in small portions, about 2-3 times a day, instead of one big meal.
2. Avoid using raised food bowls.
3. Include enzymes as part of your dog’s diet.
4. Avoid large intake/choking of water after every meal.
5. Make sure you have your vet’s contact information with you.
6. You can have your dog undergo gastropexy surgery.
