Accept, Adapt, and Move Forward

Our cats taught us some valuable lessons in these areas last fall and now. In January, we said goodbye to our beloved cat Gabrielle after a sudden, heartbreaking illness. Now, after losing an eye to cancer this summer, our 14-year-old cat Midnight is nearing the end of his physical journey with us.

One big lesson I learned from all of this is that animals adapt. They don’t whine about illnesses and overanalyze why it happens to them. They accept, adapt and move forward as best they can with their ‘new normal’.

When Midnight had his eye removed last summer, it was traumatic for all of us, but especially for him! He was on pain meds for a while, had to wear a cone and was separated from his cat family for 2 weeks. He recovered quite nicely with lots of love. He was accepted back into his little cat family, regained any weight he had lost, and resumed his daily activities. Hugs, pets, num nums, lounging in the sun and luxurious naps are back.

He simply adjusted to his new normal as a one-eyed cat and went on with his life. He made the most of his situation. She still has a wonderful life with a loving family and occasionally annoying cat siblings.

I think there is a lesson in this for us humans. Of course, life will bring us many experiences, some wanted and some not, but it is our perception of these experiences that shapes our life. We can be victims of our circumstances or we can rise above.

We can choose to label our experiences as good or bad, and then to dwell on the “bad” ones. Or we can stop with labels. What if we thought of these experiences as moments in our lives. Every experience is proof that we are living, learning, growing and moving forward in our lives.

We grow with each experience. In the moments when everything goes our way, we learn what we want to think and do next. Then some of the most valuable lessons we learn come when we hit a bump in the road and things don’t go so well. There we learn to adapt. We are learning the course correctly.

We don’t have to label it as good or bad, we just have to accept that it is what it is right now. We can take a breather and assess the situation. Remember that in times of stress we disconnect from our own intuition and inspiration. Give yourself space. Be kind to yourself as you settle into acceptance, but then choose to move forward.

The midnight cancer has spread and his tumor is growing. There is nothing we can do for him but love him and make him comfortable. And yet my brave kitty loves life. Sitting on your lap, enjoying the sun and not caring one bit about what’s next. In his moment, he knows that he is loved not and forever.

Take a moment to breathe today. Appreciate the miracle that is you and your life. Make room for inspiring action. Correct course if necessary. I wish you joy on your journey. On straight still roads and bumpy winding roads may you find the peace of acceptance, the will to adapt and the curiosity and courage to move forward! — glp
