The family includes; 1 big dog, 1 domineering cat, a 10-year-old boy and his two animal-loving parents!

They moved into a 30-year-old house knowing it would need updating. As part of the interior planning process, they took the time to think about how the house could be optimized to minimize the potential damage their pets (and baby) could cause, while still meeting the needs of everyone in the household.

The house needed new flooring and new paint.

Up came the old vinyl in the kitchen and back bathroom, worn, dirty berber carpets came out of the family room and master bedroom, all rooms were painted.

The floor chosen was a wood laminate by Wilsonart. Wood laminate made sense for several reasons;

– color chosen to match the coat color of dogs and cats

-wooden laminate durable and easy to maintain.

Non-scratch (pet claws), doesn’t need to be resealed, easy to vacuum/mop and wet mop so everyday and extraordinary pet stains would not be a concern.

The surface treatment of the walls was flat, color Navajo White.

-New paint colors chosen with a low gloss lacquer that is washable. Now, when a large dog nestles against a wall or a cat’s scent marks the corner of a wall, it can be easily washed without fear or paint removal itself.

Windows and sleeping arrangements.

The cat wanted higher vantage points and sunny windows or doors to peek out of. The dog wanted a good view of the street in front of the house. They both needed a cozy place to rest, like the beds that were placed in the rooms where the rest of the two-legged family spends most of their time.

Vertical blinds were removed from the front windows and replaced with bamboo blinds. The bamboo shade remains in the dining room half raised so the dog can peek out on the front yard and the street without damaging the window treatment.

The sliding glass door in the family room that overlooks the backyard patio has only a window valence so the cat and dog can enjoy the natural sunlight and have an unobstructed view.

The family room has a cat and dog bed next to each other by the beehive fireplace (think outdoors). the materials are washable and hide pet fur well.

The back of the sofa has a chenille throw that matches the cat’s fur exactly. The cat likes to ‘nest’ on a soft bedspread and the owner just needs to throw it in the dishwasher to clean it.

The dog sleeps on it with its parents in the master bedroom a dog bed that is coated with Cryptonite fabric. Kryptonite is stain and odor resistant, antimicrobial and easy to wash.
