Bluehost: Best Reliability ($3.95/Mo)
Bluehost Background Information
Bluehost is currently responsible for hosting over 2 million websites worldwide and is one of the most popular and cheapest shared hosting services available.
Founded in 1996 by Matt Heaton and Danny Ashworth in Provo, Utah, the company has 750 employees who work around the clock to provide the highest quality service possible.
And while the company’s long history and dedicated support staff provide some level of confidence in their offering, I’ve noticed a serious problem with most Bluehost reviews…
They give glowing recommendations for a service without considering any objective data or metrics (such as load time and uptime).
But not us…
This review is based on real statistics and data collected over 3+ years of testing Bluehost’s cheapest “shared” plan.
So what has been our experience with Bluehost over the past 37 months?
Let’s dive in and find out…
Benefits of Bluehost
As with all of our web hosting reviews, we are committed to providing you with as much unbiased and transparent information as possible on the web, and we rely heavily on statistically relevant data and quantifiable metrics to determine the quality of web hosting.
Here are just a few “pros” of using Bluehost services (according to data).
1. Strong 99.99% Uptime (#1)
Ever since their services underwent a major overhaul, Bluehost has improved their availability so drastically that it’s damn near perfect (<99.99%).
With only 2 outages in the last 8 months, Bluehost’s phenomenal availability is well above the industry standard of 99.94% and resulted in only 1 hour of downtime out of the 4380 hours we recorded during our review period.
Although their uptime took a serious hit in August 2017, Bluehost claims the issues were caused by various DDoS attacks targeting their servers, and the numbers have been climbing ever since.
Overall, this is the best availability we’ve seen in the last 8 months after monitoring over 33 hosts:
Average operating time for September 2017: 99.98%
Average operating hours in October 2017: 99.86%
Average operating hours for November 2017: 100%
Average operating hours for December 2017: 100%
Average operating hours for January 2018: 99.99%
Average operating hours for February 2018: 100%
Average operating time for March 2018: 100%
Average operating hours for April 2018: 100%
Bluehost’s easy selection allows eCommerce sites to instantly get a free SSL security certificate, OpenPGP/GPG encryption, and more.
6. “Official” WordPress.org Recommended Host
While you should usually take non-data unit hosting recommendations with a grain of salt, when the world’s largest CMS recommends a hosting provider, it’s usually a good idea to listen.
The official WordPress website (WordPress.org) recently redesigned their hosting page and listed their 3 favorite hosting providers. These include SiteGround, Dreamhost and, you guessed it, Bluehost.
With Bluehost’s simple interface, you can access all your websites and email addresses from one place.
Plus, you can customize how you want to lay out cPanel to suit your specific needs so you can quickly get to the features you use most.
8. 30-day free trial and money-back guarantee
For those willing to commit, Bluehost offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, allowing you to test their services before committing your hard-earned money.
While this guarantee isn’t as extensive as other competitors like Dreamhost, which offers a 97-day money-back guarantee, 30 days is more than enough time to see if Bluehost is the right provider for you.
However, it is important to note that if you want to request a refund, some conditions apply:
The money back guarantee does not apply to add-on products such as domains.
If you cancel within 30 days, but your plan includes a free domain, Bluehost will deduct $15.99 from your total refund as a domain fee. The company says this is to “cover their costs” while ensuring that your chosen domain name is not lost. It is important to note that newly registered domains cannot be transferred until the 60-day registration period has expired.
Disadvantages of Bluehost
1. Their customer support is fast but could be more knowledgeable
Although Bluehost has seen an astronomical improvement in their customer support response rate in recent months (in fact, they have a near-perfect internal customer review score), the quality of their customer support still lags behind its peers.
While the customer support team can now handle inquiries at lightning speed, I found that some of the more technical questions were avoiding the support representatives and required multiple inquiries to resolve.
On the plus side though, their YouTube channel DOES they contain a lot of useful tutorial videos. So if you don’t mind rolling up your sleeves, you can probably solve 90% of your potential problems yourself.
2. The $3.95/month price only comes with a 36-month plan (but $4.95/month is still cheap)
Bluehost is cheap.
But only how cheap? Well, that depends…
Their super-low introductory rate of just $3.95 per month comes with few strings attached. Specifically, it requires a three-year commitment.
If you only want 12 months of service, your rate jumps up to $4.95 per month.
Personally, I would recommend biting the bullet and taking advantage of their 3-year introductory offer, as their basic 12-month renewal price jumps up to $8.99 per month.
3. Site migrations are not free…
Most of the hosting providers we reviewed are happy to help you move an existing website from its current location to their service.
After all, it is a quick procedure to change society and become their loyal customer for several years to come.
Unfortunately, Bluehost is not one of those companies.
They charge a $149.99 “migration fee” for something most provide for free. And they won’t be transfer more than 5 websites and 20 email accounts.
Speaking of extra fees, a simple 45-minute introductory guide to their services will set you back $79.99.
Again, something most hosting providers are only too happy to provide for free because you sign up for their service for a long time.
BlueHost Pricing, Hosting Plans and Fast Facts
Bluehost offers three shared hosting options to choose from.
However, please note that the advertised prices below represent a low introductory rate for a three-year period. Rates for shorter plans are higher and you can’t get anything less than 12 months.
Also, the word “unlimited” does not always mean unrestricted (as mentioned in the last section).
- Basic plan: For 3.95 per month you get one website max, 50 GB of storage and “unlimited” bandwidth. You also get 5 email accounts (each with a maximum storage of 100MB).
- Plus a plan: $5.45 per month provides “unlimited” websites, storage, bandwidth, email account and email storage and 1 domain included.
- Initial plan: Their largest plan normally comes in at $5.45/month and provides “unlimited” websites, storage, bandwidth, email account and email storage, includes 1 domain, 1 privacy domain, 1 spam expert and website backup For. (Currently on sale)
To enjoy the advertised price for their shared hosting plans, you have to pay for three years at a time. If you choose a shorter term, it will cost much more and the minimum period you can pay is 12 months.
- Free domain? Yes.
- Ease of registration: Easy two-page registration process.
- payment methods: Major credit cards and PayPal.
- Hidden fees and clauses: Low introductory initial rate for a minimum of three years (with renewal plans that jump). And the whole we will delete your account if you exceed 1000 database tables or 3 GB total database.
- Upsells: Some upsells… But that’s common in the web hosting industry, so don’t worry about it.
- Account activation: Most users use instant activation for most users. If information is inaccurate or fraud is suspected, activation may be delayed.
- Control Panel and Control Panel: A simple, easy-to-use control panel.
- Installation of applications and CMS (WordPress, Joomla, etc.): Mojo Marketplace makes installing apps quick and easy!
Do we recommend Bluehost?
Yes, we do.
It is the best in terms of uptime and reliability.
They are cheap and easy to get started. This is why Robert Meaning suggests people start their blogs with Bluehost.
Overall, Bluehost is our TOP 1 host and you shouldn’t go wrong with it.
